Brief Description of Duties:

Incumbent functions as the Career Counselor as a team member of the Office of Career Services (Career Services) at the Van Ness Campus.  

Incumbent will be responsible for individual counseling as well as instructing group workshops to support the career and professional development of students and alumni. Incumbent will also be responsible for outreaching to employers and faculty/staff regarding career and professional development opportunities. Therefore the incumbent will be responsible for counseling, instructing, and outreaching in order to ensure center effectiveness and customer service for all stakeholders including students, alumni, faculty, staff, employers, and career partners.

Incumbent directly reports to and functions under the supervision of the Director of Career Services for the Office of Career Services.     


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Counsel students and alumni regarding career and professional development goals.

· Assess the interests, skills, personality, and values of students and alumni for career and professional develop goal setting and action plans with career assessments such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, Self-Directed Search, and etc.

· Counsel students and alumni in the development of resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, job applications, internship/experiential learning opportunity applications, graduate/professional school applications, job/internship search strategies, and etc.

· Counsel and recommend job, internship, experiential learning opportunity, volunteer, work-study, and other positions as well as career informational resources to students and alumni to advance career and professional development.

· Track and document the career counseling outcomes of students and alumni in the career data management system.

· Develop and instruct career workshops for students and alumni on a variety of career and professional development topics such as choosing a career and college major, writing resumes and cover letters, developing interview skills, searching for jobs and internships, navigating a career fair, and etc.

· Develop and instruct credit bearing career and professional development courses.

· Outreach to students and alumni to promote career and professional development opportunities such as jobs, internships, and other positions as well as career events. 

· Outreach to faculty and staff while serving as the liaison to specified schools/colleges and/or academic programs to promote and develop career and professional development opportunities available such as jobs, internships, and other positions as well as career events.

· Outreach to employers to develop job, internship, and other position opportunities as well as recruitment events and professional workshops while promoting students and alumni for these opportunities and university academic programs of study.

· Coordinate career and professional development events such as recruitment information session events, career workshops, professional workshops, Career and College Fair, and etc.

· Represent Career Services at university, employer, and community partner events. 

· Monitor, respond, and communicate expeditiously to inquiries and requests from stakeholders forwarded via telephone, email, mail, career data management system, etc.

· Maintain records of provided career services and complete data entry in the career services data management system such as position announcements, career event announcements, user accounts, appointments, employment outcomes, and etc.

· Prepare and submit reports for career counseling outcomes.

· All other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:
1. Completed a master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or behavioral health with at least one graduate course in career counseling methods or techniques.

2. Completed at least three (3) years of related work experience as a career counselor, mental health counselor, psychologist, social worker, human resources recruiter, or closely related career services center position.

3. Proficiency with counseling and instructing student populations.

4. Proficiency in student information systems (ie: Banner, Peoplesoft) and career data management systems (CSO, Simplicity, etc.)

5. Proficiency with computer software including Windows and Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Publisher.

6. Proficiency with technology including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, telephones, projectors, and etc.

PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Completed a doctorate degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or behavioral health with at least one graduate course in career counseling methods or techniques.

2. Completed at least five (5) years of related work experience as a career counselor, mental health counselor, psychologist, social worker, human resources recruiter, or closely related career services center position.

3. Proficiency in student information systems (ie: Banner, Peoplesoft) and career data management systems (CSO, Simplicity, etc.)

4. Proficiency with computer software including Windows and Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Publisher.

5. Proficiency with technology including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, telephones, projectors, and etc.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
