Brief Description of Duties

 

The position serves as Electrician the University of the District of Columbia’s Office of the Vice President for Real Estate, Facilities Management and Public Safety. The position is under the direction of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor.  Work is evaluated on efficiency, responsiveness, timeliness of assigned duties, as well as overall work ethics.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for the operations and maintenance in connection with the complete electrical facilities on a multi-building campus.
  2. Monitors and serves main switchgear equipment, utilizing electrical power supplied by PEPCO at 13.8kv, and distribution network through­out the campus complex. The electrical building distribution and general lighting systems operating at 120/208 480.277 volt.
  3. Reviews electrical facilities and advises or recommends possible improvement through utilization of sound engineering practices.
  4. Develops specifications for contracting supplementary electrical work.
  5. Provides assistance and information for updating or improving the maintenance program as new facilities are installed or the need for improvement are detected.
  6. Operates and programs the Honeywell Delta 2000 which monitors the heating and cooling systems and starts and stops the air handler unit.
  7. As directed, trouble shoots and adjusts pneumatic controls for the heating and cooling systems.
  8. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools as  necessary.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           
OTHER DUTIES:
    1.Locate and determine causes of trouble in brakes, motors, switches and signal and control systems, using test lamps, meters and voltmeters.
    2. Reconstructs existing electrical equipment to facilitate parts that should be provided by the university, for example, power cords for cubicles and circuit board relays.
    3. Disassemble defective units and repairs and replaces parts, such as locks, gears, electric wiring and faculty safety devices using hand tools.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    1. D.C. Electrical Journeyman’s license required.  Shift work may be required on an alternating basis.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
 
  1. Knowledge of the makeup, operation and installation of a variety of electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls.
  2. Ability to repair various systems, circuits, equipment and controls.
  3. Knowledge of various gages, sizes and types of wire, conduit couplings, fittings relays, boxes, circuit breakers and other electrical devices.
  4. Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations.
  5. Ability to arrange and install these devices in ways that insure proper and safety operation of systems, circuits, and equipment.
  6. Ability to advise and recommend improvement through the utilization of sound engineering practices.
  7. Ability to develop specifications for contracting work.
  8. Ability to operate and program the Honeywell Delta 2000.

Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
