GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:

Brief Description of Duties
Provide support for curriculum design of an MSW program; teaches undergraduate courses in social work research, human behavior, social policy or social work practice;  advises and mentors students and demonstrates a strong commitment to preparation of the social work generalist; ability to contribute to curriculum development; conduct and direct scholarly research; assist in the development of computer-instructed curricula; and participate in program, department, college and university service activities.
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Participate in review and update of MSW curriculum including preparation of syllabi;
  • Develop model syllabi for assigned courses;
  • Serve as lead faculty person for assigned professional development curriculum;
  • Advise and mentor social work majors;
  • Provide leadership for selected Social Work Program committees and activities;
  • Develop research or grant opportunities;
  • Teach professional foundation curriculum in the areas of research , policy, Human behavior and social work practice;
  • Serve as an advisor to 30 + social work majors;
  • Participate in the continuing review of program outcomes;
  • Other duties as assigned.                            
 
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a Masters degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited institution; a Doctorate or Doctor of Philosophy degree in Social Work or a closely related field is preferred; have an established record of post master’s practice and teaching experience as well as potential for academic tenure status; demonstrated competency in curriculum design and development at the BSW or MSW level; demonstrated potential for scholarly production, and development of grants; commitment to the training of social work generalists; an ability to work with culturally diverse and special populations; experience teaching non-traditional, diverse student populations and evidence of an ability to work well with students, peers and other university personnel.
 
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:                                                                                      
 
  1. The ability to work collaboratively in developing curriculum and planning for program outcomes assessment;
  2.  The ability to work collaboratively on research projects development of grants while serving on program, departmental and University-wide committees as part of their professorial responsibilities;
  3. Ability to assist in the development of grant opportunities;
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of general principles and methods for curriculum design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups of undergraduate students, and the measurement/assessment of learning effects;
  5. Demonstrated ability to draw upon own practice experience as a teaching tool;
  6. Strong interpersonal and organizational leadership and team member skills. 
  7. Outstanding oral and written communication skills; and
  8. Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity  to variations across age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, as well as prior training and educational experiences.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
