Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) seeks qualified applicants for a nine-month tenure-track Associate Professor of Biology position, commencing August 16, 2014, for the Biology Program in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
The Biology Program is one of the most vibrant programs at UDC and is driven by research and experiential learning. It offers a variety of courses and programs including a Master’s Degree Program in Cancer Biology, Prevention and Control. The Biology Program exemplifies community and experiential learning and embodies the belief that the role of faculty is that of mentor and coach who customizes curricula that are generally competence-based, flexible and multidisciplinary to meet the needs of students
Primary Responsibilities
 
  • developing new courses and programs based on current trends and student career interests;
  • conducting research activities in their specified area of expertise and publishing in peer reviewed scientific journals;
  • advising undergraduate and master’s-level students
  • serving as research advisor and mentor to undergraduate research and master’s research-students;
  • collaborating with colleagues in his/her discipline and meeting the mission and goals of the Biology Program;
  • contributing to appropriate service activities that benefit the Biology Program, Division of Science and Mathematics, CAS, and UDC and to the advancement of those entities through research, academic development, and grant acquisition.
teaching some combination of introductory biology courses and upper-level courses in the area of expertise;
Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate in Biology or related discipline such as Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Cell Biology, Genomic, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, Parasitology, Physiology, Zoology or - related area from an accredited institution; and evidence of:
  • a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral research experience and publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • ability to teach a number of core and concentration undergraduate courses in biology;
  • successful teaching in a university setting, preferably both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses;
  • effective and appropriate use of instructional technology,
  • research and scholarship commensurate with the national trends for assistant or associate professor standing;
  • experience mentoring/advising graduate students, teaching/assessing learning in an outcomes and/or competence-based framework, and serving as a thesis adviser/committee member;
  • excellent oral, written communication, and grant writing skills;
  • commitment to teaching, research, and service, and
  • involvement with professional conferences and associations and willing to engage students in this activity
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
  • A minimum of three years of research and teaching experience in any post-secondary, higher education or transitional setting;
  • Demonstrate an innovative approach to teaching and a willingness to continuously upgrade this activity with new advancements in technology;
  • Familiarity with student preparation for graduate/professional school exams such as GRE, MCAT, PCAT, DAT etc;
  • Mentored students conducting undergraduate or graduate research and presenting their research at national conferences and publishing in peer reviewed journals;
  • Knowledge of current national initiatives, changes and emerging trends in STEM education;
  • Evidence of having secured research funding

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
