The Sociology Program is housed in the new Department of Criminal Justice, Sociology and Social Work. The program offers a B.A. in Sociology. The curriculum provides a comparative analysis of cultures, institutions, and social interactions. Students acquire knowledge of social processes and policy issues as they study social units ranging in size from small groups to global communities. Research is an integral component of the program, providing knowledge based on direct experiences that develop research skills. Future direction of the Sociology program includes increasing its course offerings in the discipline of Anthropology as well as expanding its core curriculum to include subfields such as Sociology of Media, Gender and Women’ studies, Sociology of Urban Youth and Life course.

Brief Description of Duties:
- Teach Undergraduate students in a variety of classes in Sociology and/or Anthropology
- Advise and mentor Undergraduate students toward graduate studies and career pathways.
- Assist in the development of computer instructed curricula
- Participate in Program, Department, College and University Service Activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
- Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
- Keep abreast of developments in their instructional and discipline areas by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
- Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
- Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
- Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
- Participate in campus and community events.
- Act as advisor to student organizations.
Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Sociology or Anthropology at time of appointment is required. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the qualifications to teach courses in one of the following subfields of the discipline: Global Studies, Sociology of Media, Gender and Women’s Studies, Family, Life Course, Sociology of Urban Youth, and Social Stratification.
- Demonstrated evidence of scholarly research, presentations, and professional training (e.g. publications and presentations at professional conferences).
- A minimum of two (2) years of teaching Sociology at the College/University level; or a minimum of two (2) years experience as a graduate teaching assistant, if a recent Ph.D. graduate.
Information to Applicant
Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by the National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
