Brief Description of Duties

This is a confidential leadership position reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Development.  This position is responsible for providing leadership in planning, coordinating, executing, and assessing student activities, programs and services. The Director will implement initiatives that support the success of all students, with specific programming that addresses the needs of the university’s multicultural population.  This role is critical in helping the institution address barriers to student success from a solutions-focused perspective. The Director's primary focus is developing and implementing comprehensive, long-range strategic programs that will foster and support an inclusive campus climate to enhance the academic, social, and emotional experience of students in a multiculturalism learning environment.  The Director must develop and maintain effective partnerships with key offices and individuals, including Academic Affairs, Alumni Relations and Advancement, Enrollment Management, Student Development and Success, as well as faculty and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  1. Develop strategic planning and comprehensive programs to foster and support an inclusive campus climate that appreciates and respects multiculturalism and diversity to include assessment of such programs and services consistent with the mission of the University.
  1. Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President of Student Development on data management analysis of programs and services that promote student development with an emphasis on cultural competency and diversity inclusion.
  1. Develop, identify, and implement training programs in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President of Student Development for campus programming such as student development and success events: residence life, new student orientation, and student leadership, career services and academic advising
  1. Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President of Student Development to provide leadership for campus efforts that support the persistence and success of underrepresented students. (Veterans, LBGTQ, International)
  1. Develop and manage the Office of Student Activities and helps design and promote student growth and development through activities, programs and services to successfully retain students. 
  1. Develop and maintain working relationships with external organizations that support institutional and divisional efforts to advance diversity, inclusion and equity.
  1. Develop, formulate, and present multicultural affairs reports and other materials regarding student success development. 
  1. Develop and manage the budget for the Office of Multicultural Affairs as well as the SEVIS Coordinator and perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Student Development.
  1. Provides metrics and creative solutions to increase retention in the areas of course completion, and program progression to an earned degree
  1. Utilizes strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation, and evidence based planning

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. A master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited academic institution in Student Services, Multicultural Affairs, Student Personnel, Counseling, Behavioral or Social Science Education or a closely related field
     
  2. A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in a related field
     
  3. Demonstrable evidence of the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators and a diverse
    student population
     
  4. Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office, and other related software packages

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
