Brief Description of Duties

Design, plan and conduct experiments on designated research projects in the Cancer Research Laboratory in the area of characterizing molecular targets for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. Expected to be able to build and test specific hypothesis by conducting experiments and analyzing data. Experiment details for lab include being able to isolate proteins and analysis by SDS page and Western blotting; perform Q-PCR for detection of mRNA and miRNA; perform plate based reporter gene assays; isolate DNA (plasmid and genomic) and RNA from cells, tissues, body fluids; perform cloning as needed; test antisera for specificity and detection of desired proteins.  Also contribute in general maintenance of the lab and ordering of supplies and other performance related duties.
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                  
 

  • Manage and coordinate multiple projects in the lab
  • Perform standard cell/molecular biological experiments such as mammalian cell culture, SDS-PAGE/Western Blotting, Cloning, PCR and plate based reporter gene assays
  • Analyze mRNA and microRNAs in cells, tissues and body fluids by qRT-PCR
  • General maintenance of the lab and ordering of supplies

OTHER DUTIES:
For performance of lab additional related duties may be assigned as need arises

Required Qualifications
 

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline with experience in working in the area of cancer research.
  • Knowledge about underlying principles of various cancer related hypotheses and research methods
  • Ability to interpret scientific data and/or results and write manuscripts
  • Experience in working in the area of microRNAs is highly desirable

 REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:                                                                                      
 

  • Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, financial management for maintenance of resources in the lab, and problem-solving skills to ensure lab performance.
  • Knowledgeable of the best models and practices available in the cancer research field for conducting lab experiments, and be able to subsequently train students rotating through/or working in the lab.  This will require being up-to-date in cancer research i.e. specific training on the techniques being employed, involvement in relevant cancer research forums and conferences, and regular reading of cancer research publications.
  • Ability to initiate and delegate implementing of responsibilities towards lab performance.
  • Dedication to students, commitment to excellence in creating and providing student support services and ensuring student success.
  • Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with other lab members.

Condition of Employment:  This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.
