Brief Description of Duties


An Assistant/Associate Professor of Law has as his/her primary responsibilities teaching and contributing to the growth and understanding of the law. He/She is responsible for participating in the various law school activities necessary to the successful functioning and harmony of the institution including faculty meetings, committees, conferences, continuing education projects, recruiting efforts, and similar activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct qualitative and quantitative research in the youth studies and juvenile justice system area of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  2. Keep abreast of developments in their instructional area by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  3. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instruction and discussions.
  4. Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student centered approaches.
  5. Maintain student attendance records, grades and other required records.
  6. Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
  7. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  8. Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  9. Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  10. Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program, division, college matters, and academic issues.
  11. Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities
  12. Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.

Minimum Job Requirements

Assistant Professor of Law:

(a) an earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state or be in the process of becoming a member of one of the said Bars;

(b) potential teaching excellence and demonstrated professional competence.

 

Associate Professor of Law:

(a) an earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state;

(b) demonstrated teaching competence and a record of scholarship and professional growth;

(c) demonstrated continuing professional attainment; and

(d) at least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience in an accredited law school.

 

The Dean of the School of Law may recognize and allow the substitution of appropriate professional experience and achievement if the candidate has less teaching experience than that required above or if the candidate cannot demonstrate teaching and professional competence, provided that the candidate demonstrate potential for effective teaching. An initial appointment without tenure to the rank of Assistant Professor of Law or Associate Professor of Law shall be for period of not more than three (3) years.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
