Brief Description of DutiesThe Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, which is one of the Land-grant Centers of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The Assistant Director assists in providing leadership and research coordination in improving, implementing, and evaluating food quality and safety initiatives within the community. The incumbent works in partnership with federal and local agencies to facilitate sustainable behavior change in DC communities related to lifestyle as it affects health, wellness and fitness; provides leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating nutrition, health and physical activity-related wellness programs; collaborates with community groups and agencies to further research and program goals; generates external research support focused on nutrient dense crops and obesity prevention; and maintains professional competencies and skills required for professional practice. The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure and be familiar (or familiarize themselves) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES/UDC, and program sponsors.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  1. Utilizes assessment techniques to identify local research needs and ensure cultural relevancy and appropriateness;
  2. Provides excellent grant writing and management skills to plan, execute, and assess research programs in CNDH;
  3. Works collaboratively with other federal and district agencies and service providers to effectively address local and national nutrition, health and wellness research priorities;
  4. Supervises all staff associated with research programs in CNDH;
  5. Utilizes a variety of available delivery modes to provide educational programs and opportunities supported by research and evident based and expertise of the affiliated university.
  6. Disseminates research findings through peer reviewed publication, newsletters, and conference presentations;
  7. Networks with other professionals and agencies to effectively serve the needs of individuals, families, and communities in the District of Columbia;
  8. Teaches one graduate or undergraduate course or equivalent land-grant certificate course(s) per semester;
  9. Collaborates with faculty and program specialists in the planning and implementation research priorities;
  10. Represents the Director of the CNDH and the AD of Land-grant Programs in appropriate internal and external meetings;
  11. Maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies; and
  12. Acts as a senior scientist for CAUSES and completes other duties as assigned.
 
 
OTHER DUTIES:
 
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, and other staff within CNDH, CAUSES and UDC as necessary;
  2. Serves as a resource for research groups, community groups, and other agencies that serve families, individuals, and communities in the District;
  3. Facilitates public decision-making affecting families and provides research based public policy education when appropriate;
  4. Monitors and evaluates demographic trends for use in research programs and community development;
  5. Completes required reports, including budget, plans of work, reports of accomplishments, and other documentations needed for research program effectiveness;
  6. Identifies funding sources and writes grants to fund the expansion and improvement of research programs in CNDH.
  7. Participates in interagency meetings, task forces, and projects;
  8. Maintains productivity standards and practices effective time management and prioritizing of tasks;
  9. Demonstrates accountability for the proper use of individuals’ protected health information;
  10. Manages resources (time, materials, and staff) cost-effectively; and
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  1. The incumbent is required to hold a Master’s degree (doctorate degree preferred) in food sanitation and safety, dietetics, food and nutrition science, public health nutrition, or related focus area, from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university;
  2. Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or Registered dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or Food Safety Inspector or Licensure as required in the District of Columbia and maintain continuing education requirements as required by the profession
  3. A minimum of five years of research, teaching and supervisory experience;  and
  4. A proven commitment to research outcomes and continuous improvement in executing the responsibilities and duties outlined in the position description.

  8. Ability to organize tasks and work independently.
  9. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and evaluate effective programs.
  10. Maintains professional currency in areas relevant to expertise.
  11. Proficiency in use of word processing, spreadsheet and diet/nutrient software.
  12. Demonstrated ability to interact with a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders within CAUSES and UDC as well as outside of the college and the university.
  13. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative and exhibit creativity in implementing all responsibilities.
  14. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with the land-grant system, its mission, goals and objectives.
  15. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with federal funding agencies and local, regional and national stakeholder needs.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years.
