Brief Description of Duties
The Veterans Affairs (VA) Director will be responsible for providing direction and support to all military veterans and their families including those receiving full education benefits from the VA to enhance their satisfaction and retention with the university.  This position may supervise a team including employees/students/VA work-study by providing them with the leadership needed to achieve recruitment and retention goals. 
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, maintain and evaluate statistics of VA advising metrics to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Work with admissions and institutional research (IRAP) to code in order to process data/statistics.
  • Work closely with DoD Relations, DC Government Operations and VA processing unit on appropriate veterans student issues.
  • Work closely with Registrar and Student Accounts for enrollment verification and payment processing.
  • Work with admissions and enrollment management to support streamlined enrollment.
  • Coordinate with enrollment management to resolve enrollment and persistence of VA students.
  • Evaluate productivity of employees/students/work-study as it pertains to VA/military retention efforts.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and provide written on performance for feedback during coaching sessions.
  • Conduct mid-year and end-of-year performance assessment and development plans for employees/students/work-study.
  • Identify and reinforce training needs on VA benefits, academic progress, program requirements, policies, procedures, and conduct and/or refer to training sessions as needed.
  • Provide assistance/problem resolution with difficult/complex customer issues.
  • This position may or may not have direct reports to include program assistant/s, student workers, and/or VA student work-study students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years experience in a customer service environment and one year of veterans affairs and military student services.
  • Candidates must possess strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and outstanding customer service skills.
  • Be capable of prioritizing and managing multiple tasks; thrive in a consultative role; and have the ability to motivate others.
  • Candidates with a Masters Degree and extensive experience with veterans affairs and military student services delivery in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with student recruitment and/or outreach a plus.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
