The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in mortuary science is in the Division of Allied Health, Life and Physical Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC). The College is seeking a dynamic, patron-centered individual with strong organizational skills and experience in funeral service education.  The individual will serve as Program Director of the mortuary science program.  This is a 9-month tenured track position.  The incumbent will have the option of receiving additional compensation through summer employment. Core courses are held at the University of the District of Columbia Van Ness campus.

Brief Description of Duties

The Program Director will teach mortuary science courses, oversee administrative and programmatic responsibilities of the program, assist in the recruitment and selection of full and part-time faculty and assign courses each semester.  The director will provide laboratory and clinical instruction, along with possessing knowledge of human anatomy, chemistry, pathology, and blood borne diseases.  The director must also have knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous compounds and infectious waste.  The director will ensure that official agreements with industry partners (eg. District funeral homes and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner) are on file and updated.  In addition, the director will oversee the program’s budget and engage in community service and scholarly activities. The candidate will provide input for grant applications, participate in designing and evaluating face-to-face and online courses, provide input for comprehensive program/curriculum review processes and participate in academic advising for current and future students.  The Program Director will also participate in curriculum development and revision, recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, and assist in the development of an effective means of assessing student learning outcomes in accordance with American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; An individual must possess a Master's degree and licensure to be considered for an Associate Professor appointment
  • Must be a graduate of a mortuary science program accredited by the ABFSE
  • Licensed funeral director in the District of Columbia or licensed in a state and is able to obtain licensure in the District of Columbia within two years of hire date.
  • At least three years of experience in all aspects of funeral service including, but not limited to, embalming, funeral arrangements, pre-arrangements and cremations
  • Current Certified Crematory Operator by the National Funeral Director Association (NFDA) Cremation Association of North America (CANA)
  • Experience teaching in an ABFSE accredited mortuary science program within the past three years as related to didactic courses in the science and arts sections of the curriculum
  • Experience with instructional technology and online learning including Blackboard

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
