Brief Description of Duties

This position reports to the Chief Student Development and Success Officers and serves as an integral member of the University’s leadership team committed to supporting student success programs including student wellness, academic advising and retention and career services.  The Vice President provides innovative and strategic leadership to the Student Development and Success Division and has specific responsibility and oversight for developing, monitoring, and promoting academic student success strategies to include the management, planning, administration, and evaluation of student success programs and services.  The position serves as a leader to foster a holistic collegiate experience at the University of the District of Columbia and has the responsibility and authority to make decisions related to student success initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Provides strategic and visionary leadership, coordination and general management of assigned units (Academic Advising and Retention, Student Wellness, Health Services, Career Services, Disability Resources, Student Orientation, Student Outreach, and the TRIO Programs);  
     
  2. Develops innovative, transformative, and collaborative initiatives and strategies to promote student success, academic progress and retention; ensures and manages the achievement of division goals and outcomes by developing and implementing a coordinated service delivery model that is logical, non-duplicative and effective to meet student’s needs and divisional work requirements;
  1. Leads staff to formulate and meet goals and objectives in support of the University’s strategic plan.  Develops, implements, and evaluates student success and development programs to ensure success in operations and within the academic community;  
  1. Provides administrative leadership to the University community and collaborates with internal and external units to plan, organize, implement and evaluate success strategies designed to improve student success, retention, and graduation rates;
  1. Utilizes strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation, and evidence based planning to develop recommendations, reports and other materials; creates a seamless integration of services and functions that is responsive to student needs;  Provides metrics and creative solutions to increase student success, retention and degree/program progression;
  1. Manages and conducts program reviews and provides recommendations and training for program and process improvement;  conducts staff development and training  to enhance service delivery;   
  1. Assists in the development or review, enforcement and implementation of  University policies and procedures ;  develops and present recommendations, reports and other materials;   
  1. Develops and manages applicable budgets to ensure appropriate fiscal management and compliance for efficient and effective delivery of program and services; 
  1. Researches, establishes, and oversees the planning and implementation of activities and services for student success program components and promotional strategies to include student involvement;
  1. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage members from other cultures or backgrounds; and
  1. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Student Services, Counseling, Behavioral or Social Science or a closely related field; Doctoral degree preferred;
     
  • Eight to ten years of relevant and progressively responsible administrative and leadership experience in student affairs/student development; higher education settings preferred;  
     
  • Demonstrated skills and successful experience working in diverse and higher education institutions; urban experience preferred;
     
  • Evidence of understanding and implementing best practices in student affairs/student success including student interest, advocacy and student learning outcome assessments/evaluations;  and
     
  • Experience inspiring, leading and managing change in large diverse teams and organizations.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
