The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites applications for one  (1) full-time, 9 month faculty appointment in the Psychology Program with a target start date of August 16, 2015.  Candidates with credentials appropriate to assistant/associate professor assignments will be given full consideration. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)  offers a wide range of programs in education, sciences, social sciences and the visual and performing arts.

Brief Description of Duties

The Psychology  Program is housed in the Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences and offers a Bachelor of Science degree .  The program introduces students to a wide range of subfields within the discipline while providing a solid foundation in the major theoretical perspectives and its scientific approach. Upon completion of the Psychology program, students are prepared for graduate study in the various areas of Psychology and for entry level research or mental health settings.

  1. Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  2. Keep abreast of developments in their instructional and discipline areas by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  3. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instructions and discussions.
  4. Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
  5. Compile, administer, and grade examinations.
  6. Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate students on topics related to research based issues, international/global affairs and/or domestic policy issues.
  7. Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  8. Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
  9. Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  10. Select instructional support materials such as textbooks, DVDs, films, etc.
Required Qualifications
  1. Applicants are sought with a Ph.D. in Psychology or in a related field with a specialization in Research Method.  A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, professional training and research as well as a record of scholarly activity (e.g., publications and presentations at professional conferences). In addition, the position requires a commitment to student   advising and mentoring at both the undergraduate level.
  2. A minimum of two (2) years of teaching Psychology at the college/university level; or  a minimum of two (2) years experience as a graduate teaching assistant, if a recent Ph.D. graduate.
  3. The ability to work collaboratively on research projects as well as serving on program, departmental and University- wide committees.
  4. Required Qualifications: Ph.D in Psychology from an APA accredited program. Evidence of scholarly publications, presentations. Preferred candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of university teaching experience including advising student at the undergraduate level.
  5. Experience in proposal writing and grant writing preferred.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
