Brief Description of Duties

Coordinates the processing of Federal Direct Student Loans, Federal Parent PLUS Loans, Pell Grants and Private Alternative Loans ensuring that specific eligibility criteria are met and loans are disbursed within applicable federal guidelines. The Direct Loan Officer/Financial Aid Counselor also is responsible for assisting students and parents with the loan application, entrance counseling, exit counseling and Master Promissory Note process, as well as acts as the university liaison with private lenders for students with alternative funding needs. The Direct Loan Officer/Financial Aid Counselor monitors over need and over award reports, and makes loan adjustments each week to ensure that students are not over awarded and that loan funds are returned within guidelines mandated by the Department of Education. The Direct Loan Officer/Financial Aid Counselor must reconcile with the Department of Education, Student Accounts Office and the Accounting Office on a monthly and annual basis.
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Administers and coordinates financial aid loan programs offered by the Financial Aid Office such as the Federal Direct Loan Program which includes the Subsidized Stafford Loan, Unsubsidized Stafford Loan and PLUS Loan
  • Identify regulatory changes, their impact on the workflow for student awarding and documents them. Update/maintain policy & procedure manual and workflow procedures to maintain compliance with federal and state financial aid requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of loan eligibility and processing requirements, including loan limits, reallocation process, disbursement requirements, deferment and forbearance process, loan consolidation, default prevention, loan forgiveness programs, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison between Common Origination and Disbursement (COB) and students/parents.
  • Monitors transactions and works closely with the Bursar's office to ensure the timely disbursement and return of loan funds.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Federal Regulations and trends in the Federal Loan program by reviewing Federal Regulations in the Federal Student Aid Financial Aid Handbook and maintaining a relationship with lenders, loan service providers, and guaranty agencies as well as attending conferences for loan administrators and coordinators.
  • Conducts Entrance, Exit Loan Counseling, and provides financial literacy workshops as needed.
  • Assists in the Reconciliation process of Direct Loan disbursements between Banner and Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) Web site for program compliance and accuracy.
  • Pro-rates Direct Subsidized Loans for students whose remaining period of study is shorter than an academic year.
  • Monitors 150% Direct Subsidized Loan Limit.
  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Ensure timely and accurate transmittal of data to the Department of Education including but not limited to: clearing Pell and Direct Loan rejects and errors, and originating loans.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an effective compliance program to detect, prevent, and resolve issues that fail to meet federal and state financial aid regulations.
  • Monitor federal and state financial aid regulatory environments and communicate proposed changes to the Director & Associate Director of Financial Aid (IFAP, NASFAA News, FSA Manual, Blue Book, ISIR/SAR Comment Codes, CDR Guide, etc.).
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide work lead direction.
  • Ensure that communication, in all forms and modalities, with students and the campus community meets federal regulations.
  • Develop procedures and internal controls to ensure that financial aid is properly awarded to the appropriate students.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Coordinate and complete annual internal and required external financial aid audits.
  • Seek opportunities to gain knowledge and implement more effective and efficient processes.
  • Maintains master calendar of all federal, state and agency reporting dates and ensures compliance.
  • Coordinates activities and teamwork between Financial Aid, Finance, Student Account’s, Registrar, and Admission to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the purpose and initiatives the Enrollment Management Unit and the University.                 


Required Qualifications
 

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Previous recent experience in a Student Financial Aid office of at least 5yrs
  • Knowledge of Banner required
  • Must have ability to work in a fast paced environment and have excellent oral and written communication skills and proficient with Excel, Word, NSLDS, COD and CPS
  • Candidate must not be in default on Title IV student loans

Temporary employment is restricted to a one year appointment and employment may be ended at anytime with or without cause.
