Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a visiting Assistant/Associate faculty member in Health Education. The faculty member will instruct students in public health and health education. The Assistant/Associate faculty member must be able to present enthusiastic, well prepared, organized, and clear lectures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach undergraduate courses to Health Education students, as well as participate in scholarly activities in an area of public health and health education.
  2. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry level positions in public health.
  3. Work with students to plan and mentor research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the public health and health education. 
  4. Have a research focus in any of the following area: community based public health, epidemiology of populations, or environmental health.
  5. Advise students and participate in department and university service.
  6. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
  7. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban community health issues related to underserved populations in the District of Columbia.
  8. Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  9. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.
  10. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  11. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Special Assistant to the Dean, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Health Education practice, especially related to community health prevention and promotion.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. PhD in Public Health or Health Education
  2. Professional license if required of the public health discipline in the District of Columbia
  3. Three years of teaching or clinical experience in Public Health or Health Education field
  4. Demonstrate a familiarity with Blackboard and Banner systems.
  5. Be familiar with the Commission on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation standards of Public Health and Health Education at the baccalaureate level.
  6. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence based research and individual expertise.
