Brief Description of Duties

The Program Coordinator of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) reports directly to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and coordinates the development, implementation, coordination, and performance of community education and certificate programs within the Center for Sustainable Development. Key areas of responsibility include community education course design, curriculum development and assessment of programs within the Center. The Program Coordinator carries out day-to-day program related activities as well as strategic objectives and is committed to the continuous improvement of all certificate programs related to environmental health and education, including, but not limited to: urban forestry, green infrastructure, beekeeping, water quality management and air quality. The incumbent will work closely with Project Specialists within the Center for Sustainable Development and other Land-grant Centers, must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and initiative, communicate effectively, work well under pressure of deadlines and be familiar with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the college, the university, and program sponsors.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
 

  1. Provides direct instruction to clients through workshops, seminars, demonstrations, mass media, visits telephone and other educational methods;
  2. Oversees operations of community sustainability development projects ensuring successful, impactful programming, and project management;
  3. Develops and maintains formal partnerships that further the environmental health and education initiatives of the Center for Sustainable Development, CAUSES and the District of Columbia; 
  4. Analyzes situational information with supervisory staff and community leaders to prioritize the needs which can be met by extension programs;
  5. Recruit, train and organize extension volunteers for program delivery in the various communities;
  6. Assists Project Specialists, Assistant Director, and Center Director  with program implementation, including organizing training;
  7. Recruits and train adult and youth volunteer leaders in content and techniques of presenting specified environmental health and community education related programs;  
  8. Schedule and update weekly itinerary of each program activities and necessary resources;
  9. Has responsibility for program planning, implementation and assessment of programs to meet required expected outcomes and impacts;  and
  10. Submits required program and administrative reports in a timely manner;
  11. Maintains up to date professional competence through participation in professional development programs and opportunities, such as academic courses, conferences and seminars.
 
 
OTHER DUTIES:
 
 
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Academic Department Directors and Chairs in CAUSES to expand and solidify effective working relationships with external constituencies, program sponsors and potential partners.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to areas of responsibility as well as the needs of the college.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. The incumbent is required to hold a minimum Bachelor’s degree (sustainability and/or environmental fields and a M.Sc. preferred) appropriate to the programs within CAUSES, to the mission of the college and the responsibilities and duties outlined in this position description; and
  2. A minimum of three year of experience in increasingly responsible for environmental health education position.

  1. Demonstrated ability to develop, oversee, and assess effective programs;
  2. Excellent writing and oral presentation skills;
  3. Demonstrated teaching skills and current knowledge of pedagogical strategies, service learning and student engagement approaches;
  4. Demonstrated ability to interact with a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders within CAUSES and UDC as well as outside of the college and the university;
  5. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and interests;
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as under the pressure of deadlines in a goal-driven, fast paced environment;
  7. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative and exhibit creativity in implementing all responsibilities;
  8. Knowledge or ability to familiarize themselves with the land-grant system, its mission, goals and objectives;
  9. Knowledge or ability to familiarize themselves with federal funding agencies and local, regional and national stakeholders; and
  10. Knowledge or ability to familiarize themselves with the executive and legislative decision making process at the national, regional and local levels

Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years.
