The Counselor (Transfer Students) reports directly to the Director of Student Success Center and under the general supervision of the Director of Recruitment and Admissions.   This position's primary responsibilities are to provide customer service, transfer admissions counseling, transcript evaluations assistance, and academic planning advice to prospective and current UDC Community College transfer students. The position supports the enrollment function by providing the transfer articulation portion of Transfer Orientation and assists accepted transfer students with completing the enrollment process. The counselor participates in group and individual presentations both on and off campus and regularly follows up with students via email and telephone. The incumbent will be located at the UDC Community College .

Brief Description of Duties
 
The Counselor (Transfer Students) will conduct in-depth pre-admission interviews with transfer students examining academic records to determine adherence to pertinent transfer credit and admissions requirements; review completed applications of transfer students on a daily basis to ensure that all eligible transfer credits are identified and posted to the academic record prior to registration; implement and maintains a Transfer Articulation System that will evaluate courses that are eligible for transfer credit (including those from Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning) and determine the equivalence to courses offered at UDC as well as work with academic departments to determine, upon admission, transfer courses (and applicable credits) that can be used to satisfy General Education requirements and major requirements; evaluate and post transfer credits to the academic record in a timely manner; provide academic counseling and advisement to applicants as well as counsel students regarding the acceptance and applicability of transfer credits; assist with graduation clearance issues. The Counselor (Transfer Students) will also participate in decision-making for the Office of Recruitment and Admissions with other professional personnel in the office; make admissions/transfer credit decisions in accordance with admissions policies and standards recognized by the American Association of collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), American Council on Education (ACE), Council for higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), National Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC), Advanced Placement Program (College Board), World Education Services (WES), College Level Equivalency Program (CLEP), DSST, DANTES, AARTS, NAFSA (National Association for foreign Student Advisors), etc.; maintain liaison with the Residency Auditor when additional clarification is needed pertinent to residency and makes residency determinations by examining evidence of residency presented by transfer students and updates the Student Records System appropriately. Additionally, the Counselor (Transfer Students) will be required to interpret policies, procedures and regulations governing admissions and registration procedures and perform other related duties as assigned to ensure that the Office of Recruitment and Admissions operates efficiently and effectively.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree or one year of specialized experience required. The one year of specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge of the transfer/admissions requirements, forms and procedures for processing students.
  • Knowledge of the organization, mission and programs of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).
  • Thorough knowledge of AACRAO, WES, ACE, and other organizations that support and facilitate transfer credits.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals from a variety of constituencies, including high level management officials in the public and private sectors, students, faculty members, university staff and in other universities.
  • Cross-cultural awareness skills which permit effective interchange with people, especially prospective students, whose cultural backgrounds are vastly different.
  • Ability to adapt presentations about the University to a constantly changing audience.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the best approaches to admissions and registration in colleges and universities.

Condition of Employment:  This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.
