Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work invites applications for a full-time, nine month, tenure-track faculty appointment in Elementary Education with a target start date of August 2018.

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University services approximately 5,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Elementary Education responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses face to face, with possible opportunities for hybrid or online instruction. Other duties include serving on division, program, college, and/or university committees, maintaining an active research agenda, working collaboratively with program faculty and area partners, performing service, administrative, and accreditation-related tasks as necessary to enhance the quality of the program, and performing tasks related to the development of excellence in educator preparation at UDC. The successful candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration and work toward continuous improvement as part of a team.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate scholarly engagement, including: research, grant writing, publishing and presenting, student advising, outcomes assessment, service to the program, department, college, University and community. In addition, the candidate must be willing to participate in recruitment activities. Experience with CAEP or NCATE is strongly preferred.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) with an emphasis in Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. A minimum of three (3) successful years of experience in P-5 colleges/ universities.
  3. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  4. Outstanding communication skills.
  5. Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, and prior training and educational experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience teaching in higher education setting.
  2. Established record of scholarly productivity.
  3. A demonstrated record of membership and participation in relevant professional organizations.
  4. Hold certification or licensure pertinent to the profession.
  5. Candidates with certifications or endorsements in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or ESL are preferred, but not required.
Additional Duties
  1. Collaborate with faculty and community stakeholders for program improvement.
  2. Work closely with other University, College, and Department faculty and professionals.
  3. Participate in program governance at the College and University levels as well as contribute to one’s professional organizations.
  4. Provide assistance in writing and submitting documents and reports associated with accreditation.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
