Brief Description of Duties


The Director of General Education will provide leadership and oversight for the management and assessment of the University’s General Education Program. The Director will maintain faculty rank and remain active in teaching and scholarship. He/she will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences but also provide scheduled reports and updates to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and deans of the University’s undergraduate programs: the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business and Public Administration; the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and the UDC Community College. The incumbent receives direction from the General Education Committee through work on broad policy objectives and program priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                                               

  1. Assists the deans from all colleges and schools in the implementation and management of all aspects of the UDC General Education Program.
  2. Monitors the development of new and revised General Education courses.
  3. Teaches general education courses each semester.
  4. Chairs the University General Education Committee.
  5. Assists in the development of general education program policies and procedures to include: course development, program assessment, curriculum revision, student advising, faculty training, and workload assignment.
  6. Observes and evaluates teaching within the General Education Program.
  7. Develops and coordinates on-going General Education faculty training.
  8. Conducts an ongoing assessment of the General Education Program and communicates the results of the assessment to the University community.
  9. Develops and monitors the annual General Education Program budget.
  10. Sets a high standard of personal responsibility and character.
 
OTHER DUTIES:
 
  1. Publicizes and promotes the benefits and features of the program to faculty, students, and staff.
  2. Provides regular progress reports to the deans, chairs, faculty, and Chief Academic Officer regarding the growth and development of the UDC General Education program.
  3. Hires and evaluates all General Education program staff.
  4. Develops and distributes communications regarding all aspects of the General Education program.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Ph.D. in a traditional general education field.
  2. At least five years teaching experience.
  3. Qualifications commensurate with an assistant or associate professor rank.
  4. An understanding of best practices in developing, implementing, and managing general education programs.
  5. Experience in university administration/coordination role preferred.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
