Brief Description of Duties

The Project Specialist, Environmental & Public Health, of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) reports directly to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and actively pursues grant-funding opportunities and develops, implements, and evaluates education, academic and certificate programs, and community education programs within the Center for Sustainable Development as part of CAUSES. The Project Specialist carries out day-to-day program related activities as well as strategic objectives and is committed to the continuous improvement of all programs related to environmental & public health and education, including, but not limited to: urban forestry, green infrastructure, beekeeping, water quality management and environmental quality. The Project Specialist carries out day-to-day activities in close collaboration with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the Associate Dean of Programs to ensure alignment of all environmental and public health initiatives with the strategic objectives of CAUSES.  The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and initiative, communicate effectively, work well under pressure of deadlines and be familiar with (or familiarize themselves with) the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
 

  1. Works closely with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs to identify research and community education priorities environmental and public to meet the needs of DC residents, agencies, and the private sector.
  2. Develops relevant and innovative research strategies and writes & successfully manages grant proposals associated with these strategies.
  3. Devises workshop and certificate programs related to environmental and public quality.
  4. Develop partnerships (and Memoranda of Understanding) based on providing mentoring and assistance to interested partners focused on business development in exchange for goods and services.
  5. Fosters relationship with DC & Federal Government, public or private agencies regarding green job growth in DC.
  6. Teaches one or more academic courses per semester in CAUSES or the equivalent in community education programs (Extension).
  7. Identifies priorities public and environmental health that foster regional, national and international recognition.
  8. Establishes a team approach to work that positions green business and social entrepreneurship initiatives as an integral part of the Center for Sustainable Development, Land-grant Programs, and CAUSES.
  9. Designs, implements, and evaluates public and environmental health programs that are effective and outcomes-oriented and support the mission, reach and effectiveness of CAUSES and UDC.
  10. Communicates program goals and desired outcomes as well as implementation procedures to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, the AD of Land-grant Programs, and CAUSES staff as needed.
  11. Works with faculty and staff advance business development initiatives across the five land-grant centers of CAUSES.
  12. Works with faculty and land-grant program staff to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in research, outreach and teaching.
  13. Coordinates the annual Plan-of-Work with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs as required by sponsoring agencies.
  14. Represent the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs in appropriate internal and external meetings as needed and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  15. Supervises Program Coordinators, Project Assistants, and student interns.
 
 
OTHER DUTIES:
 
 
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Academic Department Directors and Chairs in CAUSES to expand and solidify effective working relationships with external constituencies, program sponsors and potential partners.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to areas of responsibility as well as the needs of the college.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. The incumbent is required to hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree (public health, sustainability and/or environmental fields and a M.Sc. preferred) appropriate to the programs within CAUSES, to the mission of the college and the responsibilities and duties outlined in this position description. Doctoral degree preferred; and
  2. A minimum of four (4) years of experience in increasingly responsible for environmental and/or public health position.

  5. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and interests.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as under the pressure of deadlines in a goal-driven, fast paced environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative and exhibit creativity in implementing all responsibilities.
  8. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with the land-grant system, its mission, goals and objectives.
  9. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with federal funding agencies and local, regional and national stakeholders.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years.
