Salary Range
Assistant Professor: $41,722- $65,838
Associate Professor: $51,238- $85,074

The University of the District of Columbia’s Division of Education, Health and Social Work (DEHS) in the College of Arts and Sciences is searching for a qualified tenure track/tenured Assistant/Associate Professor for Elementary Education. The start date for this position is August 16, 2015.  DEHS offers Elementary Education as a Bachelor of Arts degree and a concentration in the Master of Arts in Teaching.  The education unit at UDC is accredited by NCATE/CAEP and elementary education is approved by the District of Columbia, Office of the State Superintendent of Education.

Job Expectations and Duties
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Elementary Education is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in curriculum and instruction to elementary education candidates and education foundation courses to all education majors; serve as an academic advisor; supervise teacher candidates in field experiences in area schools; pursue scholarship; and engage in community service activities.  Faculty in the education programs at UDC work as a team with other professionals on Unit accreditation, program approval and maintenance, and committee service in the Division, College and University.  Faculty are expected to pursue grant opportunities in the larger scheme of active programs of scholarship.  
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
  • Strong knowledge and skills in using multiple techniques for teaching elementary education majors and candidates
  • Mastery  in teaching in traditional face to face format, and proficient in hybrid and online formats
  • Strong knowledge and skills in standards-based instructional planning and assessment of learning.
  • Working knowledge of teacher certification requirements and skills in teaching and preparing candidates for teacher certification
  • Strong skills and knowledge in mentoring and supervising candidates in field experiences in area schools
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well with others in cooperative endeavors
  • Ability to develop grant projects, and to purse scholarly endeavors.
 
Qualifications
The best qualified applicant will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education in elementary education or childhood education, or related field in education such as curriculum and instruction with emphasis on child development and learning/elementary education; hold teaching credentials/certification in elementary or childhood education; have a minimum of  two years teaching experience in public/private schools grades 1-6 and at least two years fulltime experience in university teaching; and, have demonstrated experience in curriculum  development in the field of teacher preparation. In addition to these qualifications, applicants for associate professor must demonstrate a history of successful teaching, and scholarship/research specific to curriculum and instruction in elementary teacher education. UDC may consider transferring tenure if the candidate has earned academic tenure in another accredited institution.
