Brief Description of Duties
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Mortuary Science is a member of the Associate of Applied Science program and is responsible for teaching various courses. The individual also serves as the Program Director of the UDC-CC Mortuary Science programs. All core courses are held at the University of the District of Columbia Van Ness campus, 4200 Connecticut Avenue NW. However, there may be times the individual is expected to teach at more than one location. This is a regular 9 month, tenure- track position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaches Mortuary Science core courses during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site and conducts a minimum of five office hours per week
- Oversees administrative and programmatic responsibilities of the program
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of full- and part-faculty
- Supervises full-and part-time faculty and assigns courses to instructors each semester and summer session
- Provides laboratory and clinical instruction; must have knowledge of human anatomy, chemistry, pathology, and blood borne diseases
- Knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous compounds and infection waste
- Knowledge of general laboratory safety requirements
- Knowledge of modern records management techniques, including basic computerized record keeping and database management
- Ensures all practicum and other official agreements with industry partners (e.g. funeral homes and District of Columbia Office of Medical Examiner) are on file and kept up-to-date
- Ensures all student records are on file, kept up-to-date, and securely stored
- Responsible for overseeing program budget and ordering all program supplies
- Complies with UDC directives and policies related to disposal of hazardous waste and proper storage of chemicals
- Recruits, advises and assists with the retention of students; answers student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner
- Engages in scholarly activities and community service
- Helps develop and teach appropriate online courses. Some experience with instructional technology and Blackboard is highly desirable
- Participates in the college governance process and college-wide committees
- Adheres to college and program policies and procedures
- Participates fully in curriculum development and revision
- Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials
- Assists in the development of an effective means of assessing student learning outcomes in accordance with the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) standards; ensures full compliance with all ABFSE standards
- Coordinates and attends all meetings of the Mortuary Science Advisory Board
- Advises the Mortuary Science Student Organization
Minimum Job Requirements
- Associate of Applied Science degree or its credit hour equivalent and degree in Mortuary Science from an accredited program is required; as well, hold a Master’s degree in related field.
- The individual must be licensed or eligible for license in the District of Columbia. Applicant must have knowledge of current practices in the field, familiarity with accreditation standards of the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), and knowledge of all state/District and federal laws, rules and regulations.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;

A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
-
At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor; Community College experience preferred.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
- An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
- At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Community College experience preferred.
Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.
