The Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor, Mental Health Nursing of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN) program of the University of the District of Columbia is seeking a dynamic, patron-centered individual with collaboration skills and experiences.  The Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor for Mental Health Nursing is a member of the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN) program and is responsible for teaching various nursing courses. The individual reports to the Director of Nursing. All core courses are held at the UDC-CC main location, 801 North Capitol Street NE. However, there may be times the individual is expected to teach at more than one location. This is a temporary position.

Brief Description of Duties

The Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor, Mental Health Nursing incumbent will be responsible for teaching nursing courses, providing laboratory and clinical instruction, recruiting, advising, and assisting with the retention of students; answers student inquiries (emails and voicemail messages) in a timely manner, engages in scholarly activities and community service, conduct a minimum of five office hours per week, help to develop and teach appropriate online courses, some experience with instructional technology is highly desirable, teaching during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site, participating in the college governance process and college-wide committees, adhering to college and department policies and procedures, participating fully in curriculum development and revision, recommending selection of textbooks and other instructional materials, and assisting in the development of an effective means of assessing student learning outcomes in accordance with NLNAC standards. Experience with instructional technology and online learning including Blackboard.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Nursing with a clinical focus in Mental Health Nursing; A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. (Community college experience preferred).
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching. 

Must be registered or eligible for license in the District of Columbia and recent clinical and teaching experience is necessary.  The applicant must have knowledge of current nursing practices and an understanding of program objectives.  The applicant must have at least two years of teaching experience at the college level, skill in teaching a diverse student body with various learning styles, familiarity or knowledge of differentiated instruction, possess a high level of professionalism, including collaboration, excellent communication and customer service skills, and commitment to a learner-centered environment and ability to work with colleagues and administrators in the development of goals for the curriculum and the Community College in a fast-paced environment.
