Brief Description of Duties

The Student Success Specialist of the University of the District of Columbia, Community College (UDC-CC) reports directly to Workforce Development site directors and is responsible for providing front-line customer service and working with students from recruitment through completion of course/program and beyond. Further, the Student Success Specialist will coordinate the seamless transition from certificate Workforce Development programs to the Associate’s degree programs offered within UDC-CC.  This individual will provide timely and accurate academic advising and will interpret certificate program and Associate’s degree program requirements. The Student Success Specialist carries out day-to-day program related activities as well as strategic objectives and is committed to the continuous improvement of all Workforce Development and Associate’s degree programs. The incumbent may be required to travel between the various UDC-CC sites.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 

  1. Assists students with admission and registration information/provides guidance in course selection process in keeping with the student's interests, values and abilities.
  2. Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of orientations and presents educational information to new students and other vested parties during orientation.
  3. Provides academic advising and other services to support student retention and success.
  4. Oversees the development, coordination and implementation of innovative methods to ensure matriculation of Workforce Development students to Associate’s degree programs.
  5. Develops programming and outreach activities related to student success initiatives.
  6. Builds rapport and understanding of student(s) that will furnish opportunities to support and guide students to post-secondary education.
  7. Assists with gathering of information, development of studies, and compilation of materials and report writing; apprise staff of general policies and procedures related to student matriculation.
  8. Establishes a team approach to program development amongst Workforce Development and Academic Affairs.
  9. Coordinates, evaluates and improves Workforce Development and Certificate Programs in support of the mission and alignment efforts to the Associate’s degree programs.
  10. Collaborates closely with the certificate and degree program leadership on recruitment and retention.
  11. Articulates Workforce Development and Associate’s degree requirements to effectively advise students on program matriculation.
  12. Works with Community College staff to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in advising, research and outreach.
  13. Executes special assignments related to his/her areas of responsibility as well as the needs of UDC-CC.
  14. Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; records findings in appropriate database systems (this activity may be germane to the Associate’s degree programs).
  15. Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree/certificate requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to student's program of study.
  16. Evaluates transfer credits from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program (this activity may be germane to the Associate’s degree programs).
 
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Work effectively and collaboratively with the Dean of Workforce Development, the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Student Achievement, (prefer Deans of Academic Affairs, Student Achievement, and Workforce Development) and other faculty and staff within the Community College and UDC as required by specific projects.
  2. Work effectively and collaboratively with the Site Directors, Deans, and other faculty and staff to expand and solidify effective working relationships with external constituencies, program sponsors and potential sponsors.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Bachelor’s degree Education, Public Administration, Sociology or related field.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in community college and/or workforce development setting with emphasis on academic advising, student success, and retention.
  3. Background in student support services preferred.

Condition of Employment:  This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.
