Brief Description of Duties

The Fitness Specialist position will assist in the day to day operations of the University of the District of Columbia Wellness Center. Assist in supervising and monitoring exercise participants perform exercise assessments. Teach group exercise classes and perform administrative duties as needed. The Fitness Specialist will assist in communication and promotion of fitness and wellness to the greater campus community. The Fitness Specialist reports directly to the Fitness Manager and must lead by example and be a physically active member of the University of the District of Columbia Wellness Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Open and close University of the District of Columbia Wellness Center for recreational usage and special events/classes.
  • Instruct users on appropriate use of fitness equipment.
  • Respond to injuries and emergencies enforce University Wellness Center policies to all patrons using the facilities.
  • Ensure the areas in the facility will receive professional maintenance service in a timely manner to ensure high equipment availability and performance. Perform routine maintenance and care of equipment.
  • Inspect equipment for needed repair/maintenance.
  • All staff is obligated in the daily and weekly cleaning and up keep of the University of the District of Columbia Wellness Center.
  • Teach new and innovative group exercise classes.
  • Assist with developing and implementing creative health and wellness incentives, programs, and activities.
  • Interact daily with clients and members; establish mutually beneficial relationships and rapport.

Other Duties

  • Maintain or arrange for maintenance of fitness equipment or facilities.
  • Develop marketing campaigns to promote a healthy lifestyle or participation in fitness and wellness programs.
  • Conduct surveys to determine interest in, or satisfaction with, wellness and fitness programs, events, or services.
  • Assist in membership enrollment procedures

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field preferred
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • ACSM, ACE, NSCA, NASM, or AFAA certification preferred
  • Group Exercise class instruction experience and certification preferred
  • Competency in Group Exercise instruction
  • Ability to instruct multiple group exercise formats
  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness center operations required
  • Personable; positive attitude
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong organization skills required
  • Good working knowledge of computers: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
