Provides overall management and leadership to all of the Student Center’s operations, functions and programs under the supervision of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Provides a student centered atmosphere that fosters social interaction among students, and offers a large array of enriching and entertaining community experience.  Works closely with the university community: Student Affairs Administration, Student Clubs and Organizations, Finance, Procurement, Facility Management, maintenance, faculty and staff and other aspects of the campus community as well as external constituencies. Provides strategic direction for operations and revenue generation.

Brief Description of Duties
  • Directs the administration of the 24/7 UDC Student Center operations.
  • Oversees facility reservations and logistical support to programs, events and conferences emphasizing customer service. Works to meet revenue targets for events and activities. Provides assessment of event support.
  • Develops short and long-term goals to meet revenue and service targets.
  • Prepares and administers building operating and reserve budgets.
  • Develops and implements of Student Center policies, procedures and guidelines. Supports the use of environmentally based practices whenever feasible.
  • Works closely with the Vice President’s Office, Student Life, Business Services, Facility Management, Financial Services and other aspects of the campus community.
  • Develops and implements long-range renovation and equipment replacement plans. Manages internal resources that ensure the proper function and support of the building, and activities occurring within the building. Responsible for all building maintenance for the facility.
  • Oversees the supervision and evaluation of personnel, which includes hiring, training, and problem resolution. Motivates employees to achieve peak performance and foster student centered culture.
  • Utilizes technology to support the planning, implementation and on-going evaluation of Student Center programs. Establishes methods of measurement of the various initiatives and work efforts.  Establishes and maintains a system for measurement of customer satisfaction by which feedback can be tracked and measured to help enable the highest levels of customer satisfaction for the services performed.
  • Directs research and assesses changing student demographics and campus trends to support program design.
  • Prepares and submits grants and proposals to support campus and Student Affairs initiatives. Develops and implements grant assessment plans.
  • Represents the Student Center and Division of Student Affairs on various committees, taskforces and local, District and national organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience managing/leading a multifaceted student center organization. Experience managing retail operations preferred.
  • Five (5) years supervisory experience with professional, trade, technical and para-professional positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop/manage budgets and oversee and allocate fiscal resources.
  • Demonstrated understanding of conference, reservations and event services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to listen, clearly articulate thoughts/directions/expectations and develop reports/proposals and make presentations.
  • Knowledge of best practices and trends related to student unions, student affairs, retail operations, and higher education administration.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
