Brief Description of Duties

Under the general direction of the Associate Director and Head of Public Services, the Access Services Librarian supervises the operation of the law library reading rooms and the circulation department and its staff, plus student assistants; manages several electronic services; provides reference services, and has significant teaching responsibilities in the legal research curriculum and in the law school’s clinics.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:                                                              
 

  1. Responsible for procedures and maintenance of circulation, interlibrary loan, hard copy and electronic reserves, main reading room, special collections room, and clinic library.
  2. Supervises full and part-time circulation staff, including hiring, training, and evaluations.
  3. Hires, trains, and supervises up to 15 student assistants each semester.
  4. Responsible for shelving and shelf-reading.
  5. Develops policies and procedures for evaluation of Circulation functions, including statistics for circulation, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and the reserve collection; and compiles library use statistics.
  6. Coordinates library security and facilities management
  7. Provides reference and specialized research services to law school faculty, staff, students, the practicing bar and the community.
  8. Participates in the faculty liaison program.
  9. Has significant teaching responsibilities in the legal research and law school clinic curriculums.
  10. Develops and maintains web-based instructional materials, tutorials, and guides to legal research.
  11. Participates in selecting books, databases, and other materials for the Library’s collections.
  12. Manages Bloomberg BNA, Lexis, Westlaw and CALI electronic services for the law school.
  13. Provides bibliographic instruction for library patrons.
  14. Coordinates public access services with the UDC Learning Resources Division and the Washington Research Library Consortium.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
 

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited school required;Juris Doctor degree or equivalent from an ABA accredited school preferred.
  • Three to five years relevant law librarian experience
  • Two years experience teaching/instructing law students preferred.

  1. Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills.
  2. Knowledge of law library and computer systems.
  3. Expert knowledge of legal research resources.
  4. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and HTML.
  5. Ability to exercise, initiative and creativity in implementing responsibilities.
  6. Dedication to service, commitment to excellence in creating and providing library support services to faculty, students, alumni and public patrons of the law library
  7. Teaching or instructional experience preferred.
  8. Dependability, punctuality, and detail oriented.
  9. Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with other team members.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
