Brief Description of Duties

Teach traditional criminal justice undergraduate courses that include knowledge of youth studies, juvenile justice system, and qualitative and quantitative research.   The position requires participation in outreach activities to community stakeholders and a commitment to do collaborative research with undergraduate and graduate students. The faculty member is expected to participate in program, division, college, and university service activities. 
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                  
 

  1. Conduct qualitative and quantitative research in the youth studies and juvenile justice system area of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that is consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  2. Keep abreast of developments in their instructional area by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  3. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instruction and discussions.
  4. Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student centered approaches.
  5. Maintain student attendance records, grades and other required records.
  6. Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
  7. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  8. Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  9. Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  10. Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program, division, college matters, and academic issues.
  11. Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities
  12. Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:                                                                                      
 
  1. The ability to work collaboratively on research projects while serving on program, departmental and University-wide committees as part of their professorial responsibilities.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of general principles and methods for curriculum design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups of undergraduate and graduate students, and the measurement/assessment of learning effects.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge in youth studies or juvenile justice systems,
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of the ability to teach quantitative and qualitative research methods to undergraduate and graduate students.
  5. Demonstrated evidence of ability to seek and obtain external grant awards.
  6. Strong interpersonal and organizational leadership and team member skills.
  7. Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  8. Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity  to variations across age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, as well as prior training and educational experiences; and
  9. Knowledge of software related to the teaching of research, statistics, and the spatial analysis of crime.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Applicants are sought with a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Youth Studies or a related academic field that includes demonstrated teaching and/or research focusing on youth studies. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, professional training and research as well as a record of scholarly activity (e.g., publications, presentations at professional conferences, research grant awards).
  2. A minimum of three (3) years of teaching Criminal Justice, Youth Studies or in related academic fields at the college/university level. Strong consideration given to comparable professional experiences with youth and/or juvenile justice systems.
