Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant Director for The Center for 4-H & Youth Development (4H) of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) reports directly to the Director of the Center, which is one of the five the land-grant centers of CAUSES. The Assistant Director designs, implements and coordinates youth programming that is consistent with the urban land-grant mission of UDC to “…improve the quality of life and economic opportunity of residents and communities in the District of Columbia, the nation, and the world”.

 

The Assistant Director works in close collaboration with the Directors, Assistant Directors and Project Specialists of the other Land-grant Centers, with 4-H staff, students, faculty members, and with the wide range of community members and organizations in the District of Columbia; provides training for 4H Club leaders and resource persons; develops program resources, and coordinates the implementation of 4-H youth programming; designs, implements, reviews and evaluates 4-H programs and activities; takes a leadership role in the designing, implementing and assessing volunteer leaders training certificates, workshops and events and other programming that strengthen effective youth programming in the District of Columbia; maintains data about the activities of the 4-H Center and ensure broad appeal and relevance of programs, workshops and events offered by the Center including camping programs, outdoor activities related to urban agriculture, urban sustainability, STEM education, and activities that promote healthy behavior.

 

The Assistant Director carries out day-to-day activities of the Center in close collaboration with the Director of the Center and other faculty and staff members in CAUSES to ensure alignment of all initiatives with the strategic objectives of CAUSES and UDC. The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and initiative, communicate effectively, work well under pressure of deadlines and be familiar (or familiarize themselves) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Director of the Center for 4-H & Youth Development and the Associate Dean for land-grant Programs to identify priorities in program development, community outreach, and applied research to reach urban youth and prepare them for successful and meaningful lives.
  • Works with academic and land-grant program staff in CAUSES to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in research, outreach and teaching to reach urban youth and assist them in developing and reaching positive goals and objectives.
  • Designs, implements, and coordinates urban youth development activities that are effective and outcomes-oriented and support the mission, reach and effectiveness of CAUSES and foster regional, national recognition.
  • Identifies resources to support program development and develops successful strategies for assessing program outcomes to affect positive change and program effectiveness.
  • Communicates program goals and desired outcomes effectively to university internal and external constituencies as needed.
  • Teaches one course per semester in CAUSES or the equivalent in community outreach education programs.
  • Works closely with the Director of the Center and the Associate Dean of Landgrant Programs to identify appropriate program locations, equipment and supplies to carry out achieve program goals
  • Represents the Center Director in internal and external meetings and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Establishes a team approach to work as an integral part of the Center for 4-H & Youth Development and other Land-grant Centers and Academic programs in CAUSES.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Works effectively and collaboratively with CAUSES faculty and staff members to solidify and expand effective working relationships with external constituencies incl. current and potential program sponsors, government agencies, non-profit & private sector entities, and students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree (doctoral degree preferred) in a field appropriate to the youth development and leadership training focus of the position.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in increasingly responsible teaching, research and administrative positions and three years of experience in working directly with youth.
  • A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties of their position.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.
