Brief Description of DutiesThe Marketing and Communications Specialist of the College of Agriculture Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia, reports directly to the Dean of the College and Director of Landgrant Programs and is responsible for developing a marketing and communications strategy to facilitate and communicate the role of the University’s Landgrant Programs as one of the three distinguishing characteristics of the University of the District of Columbia: public, HBCU, and Landgrant. CAUSES embodies the landgrant mission of the university through its academic and land-grant divisions that reach far beyond the campuses of the university and into the community. The applied community outreach mission has both local and   global relevancy and reach.
 
Marketing and Communications Specialist will develop and implement a dynamic and creative marketing and communications plan to ensure increased visibility, brand recognition and customer relevance for all CAUSES programs as a part of the UDC brand. The incumbent will work closely and cooperatively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Academic Department Chairs, and Landgrant Center Directors, must be creative and progressive, a team player, work effectively and efficiently, perform duties with independence, initiative, and reliability, work well under the pressure of deadlines and be familiar with or become familiar with the regulations, policies and procedures for marketing and communications as established by the University, District of Columbia Government, the USDA and other grant agencies.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  1. Develops marketing and communications plan for academic and land-grant programs, including tracking results and assessing effectiveness of plans. Coordinates marketing materials and social, print web-based and electronic media placement.
  2. Works with marketing team of the University and the College to successfully promote, plan and execute CAUSES events.
  3. Creates marketing materials including brochures, newsletters, presentations, event support materials, and other collateral as needed. Creates brand templates for flexible use by CAUSES faculty and staff, and works with internal and external design teams to ensure brand recognition
  4. Writes press releases and edits a broad range of promotional material.
  5. Manages newsletter including production schedule, content, layout/design, and distribution to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and mission and vision objectives.
  6. Works closely with the University Webmaster to maintain the College's web pages to reach intended audiences.
  7. Plays lead role in College's social media efforts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and potentially other networking communities.
  8. Works with the Office of Admissions, External Relations, and other relevant offices to strategize and support outreach events. Represents the College on marketing and communication related activities on working groups, division meetings, and University wide meetings, as requested by Dean.
  9. Coordinates program coverage, including photo, video and press coverage.
  10. Manages workflow production timelines of events and other marketing-related initiatives on behalf of the communications team.
  11. Assists CAUSES divisions with marketing-related campaigns and initiatives for recruitment and outreach.
  12. Designs, organizes and manages all marketing-related materials on College’s shared drive.
  13. Supervises the College’s Marketing and Communications team, guiding processes, assigning work and activities, and ensuring that goals and objectives are being met.
  14. Represents the College and the Office of the Dean of CAUSES at external events as requested.
  15. Provide recommendations for process and organizational efficiency within the marketing group Dean of the College.
 
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, and other faculty and staff within the college and UDC as required by specific projects.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to the areas of responsibility as well as the needs of the college.
  3. Coordinates College wide branding and marketing efforts with University Marketing and Public Relations Offices to ensure compliance with University branding standards, policies and procedures.

 

Required Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience and demonstrated success in the field of marketing, communication and public relations.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communication, public relations or related fields..

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
