The School offers ABET-accredited BS degree programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.  The School also offers Master’s degree in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

Brief Description of Duties


The Department of Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia seeks applications for one tenure-track position at the levels of Assistant Professor beginning in January 2017. We welcome all candidates in all areas of Civil Engineering to apply. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Civil Engineering or closely related field and a strong record of teaching, research, and scholarly activities commensurate with appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor. We are particularly interested in candidates with research experiences in the following areas: transportation engineering, traffic engineering, transportation & sustainability and/or closely related to transportation engineering.

The successful candidate must have exceptional scholarly aptitudes, interpersonal communication and management skills necessary to promote programs and to sustain strong student enrollment. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ABET accreditation in particular is preferred. Applicants registered as a Professional Engineer or with ability to become registered are preferred.

Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting high-quality research by collaborating closely with the department’s established teams, participating in and developing externally funded research projects, performing academic duties, university services, and professional services, and supporting land-grant research mission of the university by providing efficient solutions to transportation problems of the District of Columbia.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
