Brief Description of Duties
- Coordinates and implements the 4-H program throughout the District of Columbia.
- Recruits and trains volunteers in 4-H and extension subject matter content and teaches techniques to assist in implementing the 4-H program and carrying out planned objectives.
- Coordinates volunteer efforts for implementing the 4-H program.
- Holds and attends meetings and conferences as needed to assist the Program Specialist and volunteers in implementing the program and its specific projects.
- Cooperates with Program Specialist in developing the team approach to program development.
- Maintains effective working relationship with other extension staff (internally and externally), to provide knowledge of new technology as well as assistance in programming methods and procedures.
- Provides leadership for the development and implementation of advisory and program committees.
- Prepares reports for submission to the Program Specialist.
- Maintains current professional competence through participation in Extension staff development programs and opportunities such as professional organizations and seminars.
- Cooperates with other program units in planning and implementing interdisciplinary programs.
- Acts as a liaison between specialist and to media to promote 4-H programs in print and on broadcast outlets.
- Maintains records reflecting the number of residence served monthly through the services of the volunteer leaders and yourself.
- Conducts a monthly volunteer leaders training program for community volunteers to prepare them to conduct 4-H programs and clubs.
- Networks with the District of Columbia schools to start 4-H programs to implement 4-H activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with University officials, officials from other agencies, colleagues and peers and the general public.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of various Federal and District agencies providing grant funding to the unit, or the ability to acquire such knowledge rapidly.
- Knowledge in one or more extension program subject matter areas.
- Knowledge of organization, operation, philosophy and objectives of the CES program.
- Knowledge of the social economic and cultural factors affecting the CES program.
- Ability to deal with the principals and techniques of the extension education.
- Ability to improvise when necessary materials are not available.
- Ability to speak and write clearly and communicate ideas effectively.
- A genuine interest in people and demonstrate an ability to teach, relate to, and work effectively with people from diverse communities.
- Ability to work as a part of a team.
- Ability to contribute data to the monthly and annual reports for the 4-H unit reflecting your contributions to the community.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
