Brief Description of Duties

  1. Teaches nursing course content, based in evidence, guided by clinical competencies and teaching experience; experience in community nursing and health prevention preferred.
  2. Engages students in patient-centered learning activities to prepare them for effective practice with a focus on health prevention.
  3. Works with students to plan and implement research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential and active learning focus of the program.
  4. Works with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom. 
  5. Develops and maintains an awareness of community health issues related to vulnerable populations for inclusion in experiential learning projects.
  6. Utilizes a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  7. Is familiar with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including online learning, social media, e-portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidenced-based research and individual expertise; familiarity with Blackboard is desirable.
  8. Is familiar with the accrediting standards in nursing at the baccalaureate degree level
  9. Works collaboratively with other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional nursing practice and healthcare trends esp. related to health prevention and community based care.
  10. Performs student advisement, holds dedicated office hours, and performs course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.

Required Qualifications

  1. Masters of Science in nursing required, terminal degree (PhD, DNP, Ed. D) preferred. 
  2. Professional nursing license in the District of Columbia and CPR, professional level, certification required.
  3. 5 years of clinical nursing experience.
  4. 2 years of post secondary teaching experience.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Proven records of teaching, research, program planning and problem-solving skills, experience.
  7. Familiarity with and adheres to accrediting standards
  8. Proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work.
  9. High level of professionalism, including collaboration, communication, customer service orientation and commitment to a learner-centered environment.
  10. Familiarity with or ability to become familiar with the public land-grant university system and its dual mission or academic excellence and community outreach.

Condition of Employment:  Temporary employment is restricted to a one year appointment and employment may be ended at anytime with or without cause.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.


Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
