Description

The Associate Professor/Division Director for Business is directly responsible for the administration of programs in an academic division in concert with the faculty and under the supervision of the Dean of Academic Affairs. The Division Director for Business provides academic leadership for the business disciplines college-wide and externally. The Division Director is responsible for the vision, development, advancement, and review of business programs and oversees learning and program outcomes assessment. Work involves but is not limited to working collaboratively with the Office of Academic Affairs, UDC and other administrators to advance the discipline and develop innovative, quality academic programs and effective student success initiatives. This individual serves as an integral member of the College’s leadership team. This is a 9-month, tenure track position.

Brief Description of Duties

  1. Oversees governance among the division programs
  2. Communicates the vision, mission, and perspective of the College to faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders, and the needs and strategic directions of the division to the Chief Academic Officer, Provost and other campus constituents
  3. Provides overall leadership for developing division plans, new program or course development, divisional operations, curriculum study, planning and improvements assures quality, relevancy and currency
  4. Prepares and administers budget according to UDC policies and procedures, approves procurement requests and manages resources
  5. Oversees efforts to recruit, select, and orient new faculty, including adjuncts
  6. Coordinates faculty workloads, develops course schedules, and assigns instructors and classrooms
  7. Evaluates all faculty and staff performance
  8. Oversees faculty progress in program and general education assessment of learning activities
  9. Leads the division in the development of the electronic assessment system related to degree program requirements
  10. Assumes a major role in student recruitment and retention
  11. Promotes a positive and democratic work environment to include faculty participation in decision making, respect for academic freedom, and positive interpersonal relationships with and between faculty and staff within the division and the campus community
  12. Promotes and models transparency of decision making
  13. Assists in the resolution of student grievances
  14. Promotes and facilitates faculty development within the division
  15. Demonstrates support and commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action
  16. Ensures all textbook orders are submitted before the conclusion of the preceding semester
  17. Ensures the effective use of resources as well as identifies equipment and resources needed to 
support the classroom and lab operations
  18. Monitors compliance with state, regional and specialized accreditation standards
  19. Establishes partnerships with employers, including trade, business and professional associations and entities,
  20. Assists in securing funds and grants for special projects relating to division programs
  21. Provides leadership, oversight, and direction to grant programs that promote the College’s entrepreneurial agenda
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Dean and Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and other faculty and staff within the Community College and UDC as required by specific projects.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to his/her areas of responsibility as well as the needs of the College and the University.
Required Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree with industry related specialty and experience in teaching courses in business, earned doctorate preferred.
  2. At least five years of full-time teaching and higher education administration experience in an academic unit.
  3. Must have a distinguished record of scholarship and, particularly, teaching that merits appointment as a tenured associate professor in an area represented within the division/College.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications: 
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. Community College experience preferred. 

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience in the discipline is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
