Brief Description of Duties

The incumbent will provide services within the Learning Resources Division Library Circulation Department and will be responsible for the management of the Circulation Desk and other service points within the Circulation Department. Our Circulation Department services include compiling records, sorting and shelving books and other media materials, removal and repair of damaged books and materials, registering patrons, replacing materials in shelving areas, and checking materials in and out using the standard circulation process.
 
The successful candidate will be required to work evenings during the weekday and weekends on Saturdays on a rotating schedule.
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                  
 

  • The incumbent is responsible for the collection and maintenance of records of services performed.
  • Instructs student aides and other technicians in tasks and procedures of the unit and oversees the performance of the tasks assigned to them.
  • Assists patrons with the use of a variety of equipment such as desktop computers, microform readers and printers.
  • Charges and discharges materials utilizing the Voyager library system.
  • Processes materials requested through the Consortium Loan Service (CLS), retrieves books, duplicates articles, and sends to requestor’s home library or to the requestor directly by scanning the document via email.
  • Places materials on reserve as requested by faculty and manages the use of the reserve collection by patrons.
  • Searches, shelves, shifts, and sorts books based on the Library of Congress classification.
OTHER DUTIES:
 
  • Assists in searching correct bibliographic information, preparing bibliographic entries, and verifying bibliographic data using online databases such as OCLC.
  • Issues invoices for overdue fines sand maintains overdue files.
  • Informs patrons of Learning Resources (LRD) procedures and regulations.
  • Provides directional information.
  • Receives, unpacks and prepares materials for circulation, i.e. labels, affixing cards and security devices.
  • Assists in weeding the collection
  • Assists in preparing displays

Required Qualifications
 

  • Two years of specialized experience is required. The two years of specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
