GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:
This position functions as the clinical Instructor for the Criminal Justice Program in the Department of Criminal Justice, Sociology & Social Work in support of teaching, mentoring student research activities, building partnerships for homeland security internships and grant writing for the Institute for Public Safety.
                                                                                                                                               

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                  
 

  •  Assist the Program Coordinator in academic, programmatic activities, research,and academic support to accomplish the program objectives
  • Teach and assist students, as needed, in the use of the following computer software for integration into their research projects:  STELLA, Netlogo, SPSS, GIS
  • Draft student and Public relations newsletters on program activites for review by the Program Director
  • Handles logistics for visits with Homeland Security agencies, Representatives from DHS Centers of Excellence at other Universities, related private contractors, and community stakeholders
  • Assists in monitoring student internships with homeland security agencies and related private contractors
  • Collect and maintain data required to complete quarterly and annual reports on graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Assist in the implementation of a series of workshops open to all UDC students and faculty involving issues in homeland security and emergency management
  • Maintain social network sites to maintain student access to program events and engagement in program activities
  • Participation in collective grant writing by research of the literature, census data searches,  and writing rough drafts
  • Participate in department, college-wide or university-wide committees as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES:
 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
  1. Masters’ Degree in Administration of Justice, criminal justice or homeland security
  2. At least five (5) years of specialized experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
 
  • Expertise in Banner financial and academic systems
  • Expertise in use of Excel Spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of the following computer software:  STELLA, Netlogo, SPSS, and GIS
  • Knowledge of Homeland Security agencies, Centers of Excellence, and related private contractors
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews and statistical data analysis
  • Ability to lead and participate in event planning
  • Familiarity with criminal justice, homeland security, and emergency management terminology and issues
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to accomplish the mission of the program and departmental mission
  • Dedication to outreach and collaborative work with community stakeholders.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
