Brief Description of Duties

The Project Specialist for Nutrition and Health reports directly to the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health (CNDH), which is one of five land-grant Centers of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The Community Educator II designs, implements, manages and evaluates community education initiatives in nutrition education and health; collaborates with community groups and agencies to advance program goals; maintains professional competencies and skills required for professional practice; and implements research based advances in nutrition education and community health.  Primary responsibilities include assessing community nutrition needs; developing and implementing community events and programs to address identified needs; providing nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy to individuals and groups; collaborating with District and community agencies; supervising DCPS and charter school personnel and serving as adviser to primary and secondary school teachers and principals; planning and delivering in-service training and age-specific nutrition education to diverse populations from different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds; maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.  The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure, ensure alignment of programs with the strategic objectives of CAUSES, and be familiar (or familiarize themselves) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  1. Develops, implements, and evaluates education programs and materials addressing identified family and community needs and responds to questions about food, food safety, and nutrition.
  2. Develops and Implements nutrition education programs in the schools and communities.
  3. Utilizes a variety of available delivery modes to provide educational programs and opportunities supported by research and evidence based results from affiliated programs and universities.
  4. Develops and maintains an awareness of family and community needs by involving professional and lay people from all program areas in the program-planning process.
  5. Utilizes a variety of needs assessment techniques to identify local needs and ensure cultural relevancy and appropriateness of nutrition programming.
  6. Works collaboratively with other agencies and service providers to effectively address District of Columbia, DC Metro area, and national program priorities.
  7. Collects information and data on the impact of programming and regularly share information with program sponsors, advisory groups, and other appropriate stakeholders as directed.
  8. Prepares and implements a volunteer development plan incl. recruitment, orientation, and training to assist volunteers in delivering accurate, effective technical assistance and education programs.
  9. Fosters leadership development and offers opportunities for practicing and implementing leadership skills.
  10. Networks with other professionals and agencies to effectively serve the needs of individuals, families, and communities.
  11. Participates in collaborative alliances to link public and private organizations to promote and coordinate family and consumer science education for identified residents of the District.
  12. Teaches one course per semester or its equivalent in student mentoring in the Nutrition and Dietetics programs of CAUSES and s
  13. Maintains and completes required reports, including budget, plan of work, program outcomes and achievements, and other documentation needed for program effectiveness.
  14. Maintains high productivity standards, prioritized tasks effectively, and manages resources (time, materials, and staff) in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  15. Demonstrates accountability for the proper use of individuals’ protected health information
  16. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Director of the CNDH, and other staff within CNDH, CAUSES and UDC.
  17. Serves as a resource for educators, community groups, and agencies that serve families, individuals, and communities in the District of Columbia.
  18. Facilitates public decision-making affecting families and provides public policy education when appropriate.
  19. Monitors and evaluates neighborhood and District wide demographic trends for use in program and community development.
  20. Assists in identifying funding sources and writing grants to expand and improve nutrition programming and participates in interagency meetings, task forces, and projects as needed.
  21. Performs other related duties as assigned including special assignments related to nutrition and health and other needs of the college and community.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in dietetics, foods and nutrition, public health nutrition, or a related field granted required.
  2. Completion of a educational program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission of Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required.
  3. Registered dietitian (RD) with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and certification/licensure as required by the District of Columbia required.
  4. At least four (4) years of experience in increasingly responsible community education positions required.  Teaching experience in planned educational program preferred

Condition of Employment:  Temporary employment is restricted to a one year appointment and employment may be ended at anytime with or without cause. 

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.
