The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial, and community-oriented leader to serve as Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of outstanding leadership in developing, strengthening, and expanding business and public administration programs, supporting innovation, and recruiting and developing faculty. S/he will demonstrate results in outreach and fundraising, specifically in leveraging support from public, business, and nonprofit sectors. This Deanship is a tremendous opportunity to provide oversight for growth of the School as the University enters a promising new era in the District.

The University of the District of Columbia is in the heart of the capital’s embassy district. One of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, with rich cultural, educational, and political traditions, Washington is within driving distance of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to its many green spaces, museums, and historical points of interest, Washington is home to thriving arts venues as well as professional and amateur sporting events and teams.

Brief Description of Duties

  • The Dean oversees the division’s undergraduate programs as well as the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Public Administration degrees.
  • S/he will need to understand the challenges of business education in an increasingly competitive environment and will serve as a key member of the overall planning and management team within the University.
  • Key elements of the role will be to motivate and manage change, energize and lead a committed faculty, and promote community and corporate partnerships for the School.
  • The Dean will articulate a vision for outreach resulting in investment from partnerships with corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors to initiate and implement new programs and scholarships for academic advancement in the School of Business and Public Administration.
  • The new Dean will have a strong leadership background, will be committed to ensuring the academic integrity of the University, and will be comfortable working within a collective bargaining environment. Working collaboratively with other divisions within the University is essential.
 

Required Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a record of administrative and academic leadership in higher education; an active, open, and collaborative working style; and a genuine enthusiasm for rigorous, creative, and effective teaching and learning.
  • Superior communication skills, an understanding of the mission and values of a land-grant institution, and the ability to passionately advocate for excellence in research, scholarship, and learning are required.
  • The winning candidate will have a well-rounded background, especially in the area of global learning and the application of technology in a fast- paced business and public administration environment.
  • A terminal degree in a related field, a record of scholarship, and a minimum of three years in higher education administration, with at least five years of teaching experience in higher education, are required.
  • Experience within the business or public administration sector will be helpful in fulfilling the requirements of this position.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
