Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for the Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning Division (WDLL) and the direct supervision of the Project Director (Healthcare), an Instructional Designer is responsible for the creation and development of effective and engaging instructional materials for instructor-led, self-directed, virtual classroom, web-based and/or blended learning platforms for WDLL in accordance with instructions, policies, or accepted practices. Additionally, this individual will assist faculty in building courses. The individuals should think strategically and build a strong technical foundation for enabling learning. The Instructional Designer will be tasked with performing needs analyses, research, and designing and implementing contextualized learning healthcare administration courses consistent with sound instructional design principles with minimal supervision. The individual must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and be able prioritize competing demands to meet aggressive deadlines.

Brief Description of Duties

  1. Creates engaging and effective adult learning materials (e.g., facilitator guides, participant guides, PowerPoint presentations, Quick Reference Guides, job aids, and audio/video scripts) and activities using current and emerging technologies
  2. Possesses the ability to research, learn, and use technologies as they emerge
  3. Designs and develops appropriate solutions, including prototypes, modules, scripts, and storyboards, that utilize a broad range of interactive, creative and intuitive instructional methods, including but not limited to simulations, games, hands-on activities, interactive case studies, role plays, and assessments  
  4. Translates face-to-face classroom learning courses into online and distance courses by applying knowledge of instructional design methodologies, adult learning principles, human behavior and performance, methods for curriculum and training design, and the measurement of training effectiveness; and as necessary in collaboration with content experts, faculty, and staff.
  5. Proactively works collaboratively and partner with internal and external team members to research, brainstorm, develop, and implement innovative and pedagogically sound solutions for addressing instructional challenges.
  6. Assesses current curricula and course materials and identify gaps or potential solutions for enhancing education materials
  7. Researches, assesses, and makes recommendations of emerging  instructional strategies and models with curriculum development colleagues to ensure WDLL remains competitive in the delivery of education
  8. Collaboratively participates in and/or facilitate  the professional development and training of faculty in the use of instructional technologies, such as learning management system, web conferencing, lecture capture, digital asset production and management (images, video, audio), and presentation tools
  9. Creates and maintains a list of best practices based on established University business rules and industry guidelines
  10. Incorporates contextualized learning and other accelerated learning strategies into curriculum.
  11. Conducts professional development workshops, including face-to-face, online, and web-conference sessions, for faculty and staff on curriculum best practices, implementation, and other relevant topics.
  12. Assists in the performance management process by visiting classes and providing feedback
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in education, instructional design, instructional technology or other related field or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree in education, instructional design or related field is preferred.
  2. At least two (2) years of producing quality instructional materials for adult learners in a deadline-oriented environment.
  3. Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS), e-learning tools and multimedia
  4. Experience with the Moodle/Mahara environment
  5. Experience working with audio and video codecs and image file formats, such as, Adobe Connect, Adobe Presenter, Adobe Pro, SharePoint, Prezi, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, iBooks Author, Articulate, HTML, Flash, Camtasia, Captivate, other authoring tools, and/or web conferencing software, etc.

Condition of Employment:  This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.
