Brief Description of Duties

The Director of Architecture and Community Planning oversee the academic programs associated with University of the District of Columbia’s (UDC) BS in Architecture and Masters in Architecture degrees; the incumbent also serves as the liaison to the Architectural Research Institute (ARI), one of the land grant programs in the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) at UDC. The Director provides oversight and leadership for the graduate and undergraduate programs in Architecture and Community planning and collaborates closely with the ARI to ensure the successful implementation of UDC’s strategic objectives in experiential and active learning. S/he plays an active and collaborative role in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the undergraduate and graduate programs in architecture and community planning and in the community education initiatives in the District of Columbia that advance the CAUSES mission summarized as the college’s commitment to ‘Healthy Cities – Healthy People’. These may include training programs, events, and certificates for individuals, businesses and organizations that also serve as prime learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. The appointment is expected at the Associate Professor level and the incumbent reports directly to the Dean of CAUSES, and has a close collaborative working relationship with the Director of the ARI. The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure and be familiar (or familiarize self) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and its program sponsors.
 

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Terminal degree in architecture.
  2. Licensure and practice experience in architecture.
  3. Urban planning, green building and sustainable development experience desirable.
  4. Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Experience in increasingly responsible administrative positions.
  6. One (1) year supervisory experience.
  7. Teaching and research experience and program planning experience.
  8. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
OTHER DUTIES:
 
  1. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Director of the ARI as well as with other CAUSES and UDC units as needed.
  2. Serves as a resource for the UDC campus and the DC community.
  3. Monitors and evaluates DC demographic trends for use in the academic and community education programs and planning.
  4. Maintains and completes required reports, including budgets, plans of work, reports of accomplishments, and other documentation needed for program effectiveness.
  5. Participates in interdisciplinary initiatives meetings, task forces, and projects.
  6. Maintains productivity standards and practices effective time management and prioritizing of tasks.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to the needs of the program, college, university and community.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in not in the collective bargaining unit.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
