The Assistant/Associate Professor serves as the primary faculty members for the two-year computer science degree program. The individual reports to the Division Director for Math, Information Technology and Engineering. All core courses are held at the UDC-CC main location, 801 North Capitol Street NE. However, there may be times the individual is expected to teach at more than one location. This is a 9-month, tenure track position.

Brief Description of Duties

  • Teaches four (4) courses per semester; courses may be during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site
  • Conducts a minimum of five office hours per week
  • Serves as advisor to student majors; answer student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner
  • Helps to develop and teach appropriate online courses. Some experience with instructional technology including Blackboard is highly desirable
  • Adheres to college and department policies and procedures
  • Participates fully in curriculum development and revision
  • Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials
  • Collaborates with Program Coordinator/Program Director/Division Dean in the development and revision of courses of study and curricula
  • Collaborates with university faculty to facilitate the smooth transition of students into a four year degree program
  • Implements the recommendations of the program review committee
  • Develops appropriate assessment of student learning at the course, program and College levels
  • Engages in activities that facilitate student achievement of learning outcomes, such as ongoing feedback, and consultation as needed
  • Submits required reports on student attendance and course progress according to published deadlines
  • Collaborates with appropriate Student Services personnel to address perceived student issues, which may require special attention
  • Engages in on-going professional development that promotes currency in discipline knowledge and instructional methods
  • Attends scheduled divisional, discipline, and general faculty meetings, as well as the faculty professional development day, convocation and commencement
  • Seeks opportunities to provide College and community service
  • Serves as a resource person for adjunct faculty
  • Participates in curriculum development and revision that stress innovation and multi-cultural emphasis
  • Participates in departmental recruiting and retention activities
  • Adheres to professional and ethical standards of conduct
  • Familiarity with and conducts assessment of student learning outcomes, both course and program levels, according to the standards of the College and Middle States Commission on Higher Education

Required Qualifications
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field (e.g. Master’s Degree in Information Technology, Networking and Telecommunications, Management Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, including Computer Education, Educational Technologies); The applicant must have at least two years of teaching experience in computer science, preferably at the college level. Additionally, the applicant must possess work experience with hardware, software, and basic network fundamentals including router, modems, and network cabling. Local Area Networking (LAN) and Wide Area Networking (WAN) are definite desirables. Software actual work experience (within the last two years) with languages such as UNIX, C++, ADOBE, and/or VBA are highly desirable. Industry and related certificates and licenses in the discipline are also desirable. A strong requirement is a demonstrated use of technologies to enhance classroom teaching and student learning; must be familiar with assessment of learning outcomes. Ph.D. in Information Systems, Doctorate in Computer Science or related field preferred. A candidate with a doctorate in this field, with a minimum of five years teaching at the post-secondary level, is eligible to be considered for the position at the Associate Professor level.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications: 
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. Community College experience preferred.
     
    A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Community College experience preferred. 

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience in the discipline is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
