Brief Description of Duties


The Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Architecture and Community Planning programs, with a start date of approximately August 16, 2018.

This position requires the Assistant/Associate faculty member to:

  1. Teach design studios in the undergraduate (B.S. in Architecture) program, as well as lecture and seminar courses in their area of expertise at either the undergraduate or NAAB accredited (candidate) graduate (M. Arch.) program in Architecture and Community Planning.
  2. Participate in conducting research and scholarly activities in an area of Architecture and Community Planning.
  3. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry level positions in architecture and graduate level scholarship.
  4. Work with students to plan and mentor research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the Architecture and Community Planning.
  5. Have a research focus in any of the following areas but not limited to: urban sustainability, sustainable architecture, building technology, digital fabrication, urban design, urban planning, and built environment.
  6. Advise students and participate in department and university service.
  7. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
  8. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban planning, urban sustainability, and urban architectural issues in communities in the District of Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  2. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on-line learning and social media, to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence based research and individual expertise.
  3. Demonstrate a familiarity with, or willingness to learn, Blackboard and Banner systems or other learning management systems.
  4. Be familiar with the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation standards.
  5. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Associate Dean, Program faculty, other academic units in CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Architecture practice.
  6. Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  7. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.
  8. The ability to teach a variety of architecture courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Terminal degree in Architecture (M.Arch. or B.Arch plus post-professional master’s degree in architecture or related field).
  2. Practice experience and Registered Architect in one of the 54 U.S. jurisdictions.
  3. Three (3) years of teaching in Architecture and Community Planning field.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Proven record of teaching, research, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Familiarity with and adherence to NAAB accreditation standards.
  7. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.

  2. Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills.
  3. Knowledgeable of the best models and practices available to encourage student success. This will require regular research in this area, specific training, as necessary, involvement in relevant forums and conferences and regular reading of higher education news sources.
  4. Ability to exercise, initiative and creativity in implementing responsibilities.
  5. Dedication to students, commitment to excellence in creating and providing student support services and ensuring student success.
  6. Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with other team members.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
