Brief Description of Duties

The Director Alumni Affairs and Outreach is responsible for developing and implementing an innovative, comprehensive engagement program designed to provide meaningful opportunities for service, volunteerism, professional and personal development, and programs and events for alumni and related outreach efforts to further improve loyalty, dedication, and support for the University of the District of Columbia. The Director of Alumni Affairs and Outreach reports to the Executive Director of External Affairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages, plans, develops, markets and implements programs for alumni involvement. Prepares strategic plan.
  • Develops draft budgets for Alumni programs. Manages the alumni-related budget to ensure resources are allocated effectively and within established parameters.
  • Develops and implements tracking processes to collect data and develop reports related to alumni and community program participation and overall cost-effectiveness.
  • Prepares reports, presentations and proposals for internal and external community members and alumni.
  • Enhances, builds and maintains the University alumni database, email list and other communications vehicles.
  • Assists schools and campus units in developing programs to increase and motivate alumni involvement including development and distribution of information. Works with deans and other faculty members to recognize outstanding alumni and students within their respective schools.
  • Engages alumni in the life of the University through consistent and positive communication using electronic, print, and social media, exceptional customer service, meaningful opportunities for service, volunteerism, professional and personal development, and programs and events.
  • Manages the student and young/trendy alumni engagement plans to build life-long connection and facilitate continued engagement and support for the University. Manages social media pages and strategy.
  • Participates in the preparation of the monthly University E-Newsletter, and other alumni focused media.
  • Develops outreach methodologies for alumni for job placements.
  • Provides leadership and support for the Alumni Association including assisting with meeting facilitation, event support, fundraising, recruiting, and membership development, and retention programs.
  • Oversees on-campus alumni activities including class and special reunions, commencement/reunion weekend and other campus activities.
  • Identifies and launches loyalty programs that provide benefit and service to alumni to cultivate volunteers and donors and generate income for alumni association programming and university fundraising.
  • Researches and integrates best practices to successfully implement programs for the Alumni Association, including strategies around community-based social marketing, program structure, and collaborating with other university based programs/associations for cross-promotion and marketing.
  • Collaborates with advancement, fundraising, communications, marketing and admissions staff to enhance communication between alumni and the university, and work to increase the role of alumni in admissions programs and special projects and to increase giving. Coordinates efforts including direct mail, electronic mail, social media, and web interfaces.
  • Responds to visits, correspondence, and telephone communications from alumni.
  • Facilitates strong relationships between alumni and the university by cultivating and directing a comprehensive and diversified program of activities and programs that support alumni interests and concerns.
  • Creates outreach opportunities for on-and off-campus programs, recruiting alumni volunteer leaders and managing and supporting their work.
  • Assists the Executive Director in enhancing the public image of the University and its programs. Performs community outreach. Attends events.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required, a master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience
  • Management and professional administrative skills in planning, organization, budgeting and project delivery
  • Strong and effective communications skills, both oral and written are essential. Writing skills for editing and approving the work of others, and for the creation of interesting and attractive materials
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and diligence in fulfilling commitments to others.
  • Proficient in the use of technology.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
