Brief Description of Duties


The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a visiting Assistant/Associate faculty member in Nutrition and Dietetics, with a start date of approximately August, 2018.

General Description Job

  1. Teach undergraduate courses such as to Nutrition and Dietetics students, as well as participate in conducting research and other scholarly activities in an area appropriate to the field of nutrition and dietetics. May teach graduate level courses with a terminal degree.
  2. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry into dietetics internships.
  3. Work with students to stimulate research and identify service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills relevant to the DPD program.
  4. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
  5. Serve as thesis advisor and committee member for graduate thesis projects.
  6. Develop and maintain awareness of urban community health issues related to underserved populations in the District of Columbia.
  7. Have a research focus in any of the following area: sustainable food systems, community nutrition intervention and education, behavioral nutrition intervention, food policy, pediatric obesity, nutrition and disease prevention.
  8. Skilled in teaching nutrition and dietetics courses at the 100 level, 200 level, 300 level, and 400 level, particular area of interest in Nutrition assessment, Advanced nutrition, and Medical Nutrition Therapy

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  2. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence based research and individual expertise.
  3. Demonstrate a familiarity with Blackboard and Banner systems.
  4. Prepare comprehensive course syllabus, to include approved student learning objectives/outcome evaluation form.
  5. Be familiar with the ACEND accreditation standards of Nutrition and Dietetics at the baccalaureate level.
  6. Work collaboratively with the Didactic Program Dietetics (DPD), Department Chair, Associate Dean of Academic programs, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Nutrition and Dietetics practice, especially related to community health promotion and disease prevention.
  7. Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  8. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Master's of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics required, Ph.D. preferred
  2. Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD)
  3. Professional Nutrition/Dietetics license in the District of Columbia
  4. Three (3) years of teaching or clinical experience in nutrition and dietetics
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills
  6. Proven record of teaching, research, program planning and problem-solving skills
  7. Familiarity with and adherence to ACEND accreditation standards
  8. Familiarity with or ability to become familiar with the urban land-grant university system and its dual mission or academic excellence and community outreach

This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
