Brief Description of Duties


The incumbent will serve as the Executive Director for the Strategic Partnerships (SP) Unit located in the Office of the President at the University of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC. The incumbent will act as an innovation agent and facilitator performing various functions to create and set the direction for new and existing initiatives while collaborating with innovators and key stakeholders throughout the University and the community. He/she will ensure successful development and execution of innovation, equity, and administrative shared service initiatives, policies and programs. The Executive Director will wil serve as a strategic and operational assistant to the Chief of Staff, developer and manager of business and community partnerships, project lead for key equity and innovation initiatives identified by the President and the Chief of Staff, developer and operational head of the new Shared Services Executive Services (the ES) unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will advance innovation and equity initiatives through the innovation life cycle which includes identification, design, development, management, promotion, evaluation, launch and scaling of initiatives including identification of best practices and facilitating idea generation.

The incumbent will develop, facilitate and manage relationships with key organizations and stakeholders, outside of and within the UDC administration, to accomplish new and enhance existing services and opportunities for UDC students, faculty and the greater community. He/she must stay abreast of trends and innovation and equity opportunities. The selectee will ensure outstanding customer service for ES Cabinet Members (and CAO as needed) and their internal and external customers.

The selectee is responsible for the delivery of administrative and operational support including training, compliance, audit preparation, scheduling, budget preparation and maintenance, procurement, process improvements, and talent management duties. He/she will also draft letters of interest, concept papers, proposals, budgets, and business plans for new and existing innovation and equity initiatives in consultation with the President. The incumbent will develop and implement tactics to drive an Equity Imperative mindset and innovation culture within the Office of the President, as directed by the Chief of Staff and the President.

The incumbent will build, manage and refine the SP unit in collaboration with the Chief of Staff to ensure the unit provides optimal operational and administrative support to the President’s Cabinet and effective delivery of services to the University’s students, faculty staff, Board of Trustees, and external clients including training the staff on IT systems and the drafting of required processes and procedures. He/she will also manage, develop and mentor the ES staff including student interns, and provide mentors for other junior and mid-level staff; and assist the Chief of Staff in the overall operation of the ES unit.

The incumbent will work closely with the President and the Chief of Staff in shaping and leading strategic projects, developing the strategy and protocols for working with the community, agency and business partners at the local, regional, state, national and global levels, and act as one of the primary liaisons for community and business initiatives at the University.

The incumbent will support the CAO Office as needed, and advise and assist the Chief of Staff, COO, and General Counsel on strategic and operational issues including sensitive matters and representing these ES Cabinet Members in internal and external meetings. He/she will also use problem-solving to evaluate and prioritize customer needs and requirements and find ways to deliver business value.

The selectee will work with the President, the Chief of Staff, COO, and General Counsel to vet, develop, manage and report on existing projects and new projects and initiatives with business, education and nonprofit organizations that create educational opportunities for our University community throughout the city, the region, the state and globe. The position manages multiple projects simultaneously and builds strong collegial relationships while working within a budget and strict deadlines.

The incumbent participates and/or leads a variety of institutional task forces and, for purposes of information development, sharing, review and maintenance to assure alignment with UDC’s Equity Imperative.

The incumbent assists the Chief of Staff and President in providing support to the UDC Foundation and the Athletics Department regarding development and sponsorship opportunities.

Other Duties

  • Represents the Office of the President at key events and meetings and participates and/or leads a variety of institutional task forces and for purposes of information development, sharing, review, and maintenance to assure alignment with UDC’s Equity Imperative and other innovation initiatives.
  • Collaborates with and provides support to the UDC Foundation regarding development and sponsorship opportunities especially regarding equity and innovation initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned including providing additional capacity for the Office of President by being flexible and available for emergency situations in which the position may be assigned a role to substitute for missing personnel within the scope of the Office of the President.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A Master's Degree or other advanced degree in a business, economics or similar discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a responsible lead innovation, lead strategic advisory, project management and operational role in a University, corporate, or nonprofit setting (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
