Brief Description of Duties

  1. Operates variety of communications equipment, information and alarm systems in order to alert disseminate appropriate information to University Police and to the community; conducts regular tests of the related equipment and notifies a supervisor of any malfunctions.
  2. Maintains the Customer Service Center providing receptionist duties (i.e.: answering simultaneous ringing phone lines and greeting customer walk-ins,    while monitoring and maintaining communications with field units via the police radio frequency).
  3. Distinguishes, prioritizes and dispatches multiple calls for service as appropriate to their nature/urgency.  Maintains close consultation with the shift supervisor, particularly as it pertains to fielding matters of uncertainty, including keeping the shift supervisor immediately and continually informed on all aspects of activity coming through the Communications Center.
  4. Maintains working knowledge of public safety, security, and other emergency resources in the area in order to provide accurate information to the general public. 
  5. Performs data entry using the department’s automated records management system and computer aided dispatch (RMS/CAD) for recording all shift activity.  Completes various paperwork such as hard copy Communications Activity logs (in the event of system failure), work orders, referral forms, and other reports to be forwarded to appropriate divisions for follow up (i.e.: facilities maintenance, police administration).
  6. Maintains specified logs and shift reports and initiates data entry for various communications using the RMS/CAD databases.  Generates various queries and reports using the RMS/CAD database and performs general clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.
  7. Recognizes important communications and prioritizes information received according to established policies and procedure, and with considerable latitude for judgment.  Initiates action based on information received, including relaying clear and concise information to field officers, supervisors and officials, and appropriate notification to various law enforcement and emergency response agencies
  8. Issues non-assigned equipment (keys, spare radios, batteries, flashlights, bull    horns, etc.) located within the Communications Center.  Ensures that all equipment is present and accounted for (signed in and out) at the start and end of each respective tour of duty and maintains; controls and restricts access to the Public Safety Communications Center.  
  9. Operate I.D. badging station, Issue and maintain student, staff, faculty and visitor credentials; as well as issue temporary and long term parking permits (if needed). This can be at any of the UDC locations as assigned if trained on equipment.
  10. Be able to operate a video monitoring system, alarm system, and access control systems. 
  11. Attends and successfully completes training as required by UDC and UDCPD. 
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or GED required. Prior experience in University Police/Security Communications or dispatch preferred.  Prior experience on the use of public (police, fire, transit, etc.) radio systems preferred.  Prior experience on the use of a video monitoring system, ID production, access control, and alarm systems preferred.
  2. Must possess (and maintain) a valid driver’s license prior to employment.
  3. Must have US citizenship to meet the credentialing requirements for the NCIC and Wells background investigation access.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
