Brief Description of Duties

 

  1. The Associate Professor of Nutrition and Health and Senior Specialist for Community Partnerships oversee both academic and landgrant program related functions within the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The incumbent teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses as needed, establishes and oversees the College’s internship program in Nutrition and Dietetics, participates in the college’s community education programs in nutrition and health, and is expected to engage students in the college’s community outreach and education programs as outlined in the experiential learning focus of UDC’s strategic plan Vision 2020. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the Director of the Nutrition and Dietetics program and with the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, one of the land-grant Centers of CAUSES.
    The incumbent establishes, implements, directs, and evaluates the Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics integrated with the Dietetic Internship program as required by ACEND with a specific focus on community nutrition and food systems; oversees the successful initial accreditation of the internship program and its subsequent reaccreditations; establishes and maintains effective partnerships with a specific focus on community nutrition and wellness; collaborates with preceptors at the community internship sites; evaluates wellness initiatives in the District of Columbia that advance healthy lifestyles, good nutrition, and fitness in collaboration with clients and organizations; develops programs and initiatives that engage students in clinical practice settings including events, in-service training, and certificate programs for individuals, agencies, community health centers, schools and other organizations that can serve as prime learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students in nutrition & dietetics; collaborates closely with other academic programs especially in health education and nursing, and with the university’s landgrant centers for urban agriculture and sustainable development. The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure and be familiar (or familiarize self) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
     
  2. Oversees the self-study process to secure the successful accreditation of the MS in Nutrition and Dietetics integrated with the Dietetic Internship program at UDC.
  3. Coordinates and oversees the graduate internship program in Nutrition and Dietetics and manages students’ practice related learning experiences.
  4. Develops and maintains an awareness of community nutrition, health and wellness by involving internal and external constituencies in program planning and design.
  5. Utilizes a variety of assessment techniques to identify local needs and ensure cultural competency and appropriateness of nutrition and wellness programs.
  6. Develops, implements, and evaluates education programs and materials to address identified needs and effective responses related food systems issues including family, consumer, food safety, nutrition, dietetics, wellness and health needs and related practice experiences.
  7. Utilizes a variety of available delivery models to provide educational programs and opportunities supported by research and evidence based assessment in line with ACEND standards and best practices at other landgrant universities.
  8. Is adept at food systems and community participation related research methods and participatory approaches.
  9. Works with graduate students and CAUSES colleagues to plan and implement research projects incl. review of relevant literature, assisting with research design, developing research protocols.
  10. Works collaboratively with other CAUSES landgrant centers and academic units as well as with DC agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to food safety, nutrition and health.
  11. Fosters leadership development opportunities and opportunities for practicing and implementing leadership skills and networks with professionals and agencies to serve the needs of students and community clients.
  12. Engages graduate students (and undergraduate students as appropriate) in the activities listed under points 3 to 10 above.
  13. Oversees the Implementation and training of volunteers as needed, develops and delivers accurate and effective assistance and education in relevant program areas.
  14. Teaches graduate and undergraduate courses as needed in coordination with the director of the nutrition and dietetics program.
  15. Serves as a preceptor for dietetic students and interns completing community nutrition, clinical and management rotations, plans learning experiences, and evaluates performance.
  16. OTHER DUTIES:
     
  17. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Director of the Nutrition and Dietetics program, the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, and other CAUSES and UDC units as needed.
  18. Serves as a resource for the UDC campus and the DC community.
  19. Serves as a resource for public decision-making related to nutrition and health and provides public policy education when appropriate.
  20. Monitors and evaluates DC demographic trends for use in the graduate program and community education programs.
  21. Initiates community development education when appropriate.
  22. Maintains and completes required reports, including budgets, plans of work, reports of 
accomplishments, and other documentation needed for program effectiveness.
  23. Assists in identifying funding sources to support the expansion and improvement of nutrition, food security and health programming.
  24. Participates in interagency meetings, task forces, and projects.
  25. Maintains productivity standards and practices effective time management and prioritizing of tasks.
  26. Demonstrates accountability for the proper use of protected client and agency information.
  27. Manages resources incl. time, materials, and staff in a cost-effective manner.
  28. Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to nutrition and health and 
other needs of the college, university and community.
Required Qualifications
 
  1. Ph.D. degree in dietetics, nutrition, food systems, public health nutrition, or related area granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)
  3. Registered Dietitian (RD) or eligible for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and certification/licensure as required by the District of Columbia.
  4. Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.  Experience as an internship director is preferred.
  5. Excellent problem-solving skills.
  6. Four (4) years of experience in increasingly responsible community positions in the field of dietetics.
  7. One (1) year supervisory experience.
  8. Teaching and research experience; program planning experience desired.
  9. A valid driver’s license to travel within the district as needed for community education and student supervision purposes.
  10. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
