Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent functions as a Student Employment Coordinator in the Office of Financial Aid, Division of Student Affairs, University of the District of Columbia under the direct supervision of the Director of Financial Aid (or designee). The Student Employment Coordinator provides services to a diverse student population at the University.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assesses an individual student’s financial need and ascertains the student’s eligibility to participate in federal and/or institutional aid programs and gives counsel to the students on how to integrate their financial, personal, and /or academic concerns, by explaining the various types of available financial aid. When necessary, assists students or parents in the preparation of pertinent forms or documents required for application for financial aid.
  • Analyzes background information submitted by the student on various financial aid applications and ensures data is consistent on all forms. Posts student data on renewal applications and cross checks for accurate and consistent information on all aid applications.
  • Evaluates the academic status of each applicant relative to eligibility for assistance under the Federal Pell Grant and the U.S. Department of Education Regulations and Guidelines. Advises and counsels aid applicants/recipients about the requirements or standards set forth in the Board of Higher Education’s Policies on Academic Good Standing.
  • Coordinates the university’s student employment programs, including Federal Work Study (FWS) and Student Employment Program (SEP). This task includes the timely processing of all student worker personnel actions.
  • Identifies, recruits, contacts and enlists new students into the employment programs. Ensures the effective, efficient operation of all on- and off-campus recruitment activities.
  • Generates quantitative and qualitative reports on student employment programs:
  • Provides monthly reports to the Director and Associate Director of Financial Aid
  • Ensures Federal work study family literacy and community service requirements are met.

 

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Bachelor’s degree
  2. Two (2) years of experience in an educational or employment environment, with specific experience in one or more areas of student services, or the equivalent of the combination of three years experience in student development, career services, job development or workforce development.


Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is not part of the collective bargaining unit.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
