The Project Specialist, Green Infrastructure, of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) reports directly to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development.  Key areas of responsibility include planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring projects and programs that lead to a quantifiable reduction in nonpoint sources of pollution and advancing the state of practice in building design and construction, promoting sustainable design and innovation, becoming a recognized knowledge-based node in the global network of infrastructure experts, and the assisting with the integration of academic and community education programs within CAUSES. Incumbent understands green infrastructure practices and programs and building mechanical and ecological (ecosystems-based) systems.  Work is oriented towards short-term and multi-year projects.  The incumbent will also interface closely with the academic programs within CAUSES and other programs external to the College.  The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the Associate Dean for Land-grant Programs, must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and initiative, communicate effectively, work well under pressure of deadlines and be familiar (or familiarize themselves) with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the college, the university, and program sponsors.

Brief Description of Duties

  1. Developing and establishing applied research foci and expertise in line with the strategic direction of the program.  Also develops partnership with industry stakeholders and solicit research funding from government agencies and industry stakeholders, and provide industry services;
  2. Establishing and managing a performance monitoring framework with clear-cut goals, outcomes, outputs, inputs, processes, indicators, data needs and sources, and reporting formats and frequency, for effective monitoring, reporting and updating progress of CAUSES programs and projects in different sectors;
  3. Develops and delivers community education programs incl. Workforce Development, Certificate and Community Education Programs and program assessments; that are effective and outcomes-oriented and support the mission, reach and effectiveness of CAUSES and foster regional, national and international recognition.
  4. Teaches one course per term in an applicable academic program of CAUSES or the equivalent in community education programs (extension services).
  5. Assist the Program Director in setting up research priorities;
  6. Assist the Program Director in preparing operational budgets;
  7. Actively engage in scholarly activities and produce publications;
  8. Coordinates closely with the partner administrations for data planning, identification of data sources, and collection of data for monitoring purposes;
  9. Monitors and following up progress on various proposals, meetings, reports, working papers etc. with concerned authorities;
  10.  Collaborates closely with the Associate Dean for Programs on program development related matters;

Required Qualifications

  1. The incumbent is required to hold a Master’s degree (doctoral degree preferred) in landscape architecture, agriculture, natural resources, watershed science or community resources or economic development or a related field and the responsibilities and duties outlined in this position description.
  2. Demonstrated leadership and management abilities with evidence of being able to work well with volunteers and diverse clientele.
  3. Personal transportation and valid driver’s license.
  4. Must be willing to travel throughout the District as needed.
  5. Knowledge and use of computer technology for educational programming and management.
  6. Evidence of excellent teaching & communication skills.
  7. Demonstrated success in writing research proposals and securing research funding.
  8. Proven ability to produce quality publications in the field of specialization.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
