Brief Description of Duties

Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach reports to the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics.  The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignments in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices in the occupation.  The incumbent is responsible for administering all aspects of a successful NCAA program consistent with the rules and regulations of the university as well as NCAA by-laws, and is responsible for the conduct of the men’s and women’s cross country and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field program. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  1. Recruits, enrolls, sustains and graduate academically qualified student-athletes, with representative standardized test scores.
  2. Oversees administration of team travel, budget, practice and competition under the direction of the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics.
  3. Schedules contests subject to the approval of the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics.
  4. Supervises and evaluate assistant coaches and their activities.
  5. Conducts self and the program in accordance with all NCAA rules and regulations.
  6. Maintains a competitive program.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Maintains effective communication with the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance.
  2. Maintains effective communication with the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Support and Student-athlete services.
  3. Maintains effective communication with the Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations and other support staff.
  4. Maintains effective communication with the Sports Information Director
  5. Assists Director of Athletics in fund raising and community relations.
  6. Operates sport camp and/or clinics.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate degree
  2. Experience as a student-athlete
  3. Understanding of the mission and ethos of the university and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
  4. Coaching experience
  5. Experience working in the higher education setting on the NCAA level is preferable.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
